I'm thinking of getting my wife a savage model 93 in 22 mag for target / varmint shooting. The one that peaks my intrest has the laminate thumb hole stock and stainless fluted barrel. Does anyone have any insight on this rifle or pros/cons

The bsev model? I bought the .22lr version. I'll be picking it up from my lgs tomorrow. I've heard nothing but good things about the Savage 93 BSEV model. All I can say it I'd probably recommend getting one in 17hmr. I regret that I opted for .22lr vs 17hmr a little bit. Although ammo costs makes up for it. The 17hmr is supposed to be quite the varmint round.sigpic

I have an older 93 heavy barrel in 17hmr with hardwood stock, its a great rifle. I wish mine had the accu-trigger, but I bought it about a year before the accu-trigger was released. You may want to consider getting a 17 hmr instead of the 22 mag. The 17 shoots much flatter, is very accurate and will tear up varmints. The 17 will suffer more in the wind however. Mine will shoot 1/2" moa all day if I do my part. Either way, I'm sure you will be more than pleased with a savage 93.

pretty sure you can convert that .22 into a .17hmr pretty easily molto. I havent researched it much but I suggest you look into it. and the btvs has a thumbhole but no fluting. the bsev has a pistol grip ambidextrous stock and spiral fluting. not sure which one youre referring to. theyre basically the same the bsev being more flashy but functionally the same. I chose to save the money and get the btvs but both will serve you well.Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.

Knowing how I am ill probably end up with another Savage in 17hmr. Or possibly 17wsm depending on if the 17wsm ammo ends up being more available. Right now it's few and far between for ammo and super expensive.pretty sure you can convert that .22 into a .17hmr pretty easily molto. well its a boutique round at the moment. needs more people*cough cough* to make it popular so that ammo manufacturers produce it. its a vicious cycle. no one buys it because its hard to find. no one makes it because no one buys it...Just a libertarian guy in a Leftist Authoritarian state.

I have the FVSS model, bull stainless and synthetic stock. shoots great, seems to like the CCI pricey stuff better than the lower priced stuff. Excellent rifle for the $.Buying a safe and sane firework is like paying a hooker for a hug. I do not see the appeal in it.Comment

I have the 93R17 BTVS model. I like it, shoot well, but have only shot paper so far.We are all Masters of our own Ship. It's the course changes that you make, that affect your life.
I'm not paranoid, I know they're out to get me.

I will say she sure is pretty, but not light. I would say atleast 8lbs with the scope mounted. She may look trim like a model, but if you pick it up she would fall into the plus size category haha.sigpic

I recently bought the 93BTVSS in 17 HMR. It is a really great rifle, especially for under $400 to my FFL. Nice stock, smooth bolt action, crappy accutrigger. I already changed my trigger out for a Rifle Basix. Adjusted to one pound and never a slam fire (yet). HMR ammo is coming way down and is readily available. I bought 30 boxes online for $9.95 per box of 50.
As for the 17WSM, I wouldn't hold my breath. If you have held one you would be very disappointed. Very cheap feel and even a lower version of the Accutrigger. Unless Savage or Remington makes a better model (bull barrel, etc.), and when Other ammo makers get in on the action, it might make it, but the 17 field is already crowded with better guns and lots of ammo.Comment
