    Heavier buffer for AR22 rifle?

I was looking at parts lists for AR22 based lower receivers and one person mentioned using heavier buffer's to reduce the noise made from their AR22.

Anyone know the theory behind that?

Also how would the heavier buffer affect the 5.56 round in the event I put a different upper on it?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The AR22 is a blow back system.
The buffer would have little or no effect for noise.

The Taccom pressure plug installed in front of the buffer will give forward pressure against the back of the .22 BCG to keep it from moving which I suppose could cut down on noise from the whole bcg slamming forward.

A lot of noise from the AR .22 comes from the chamber area and rear of the bcg being exposed due to the ejection port being over sized.

Taccom just came out with an upper receiver specific to .22's with a shorter ejection port, covering the chamber and rear area.

I'm going to test this theory of noise reduction with the shorter ejection port soon.

Get the Taccom pressure plug and install it over any existing buffer(weight does not matter).

As stated above all the mechanical movement of the .22 lr action takes place in the .22 lr bolt carrier in the upper receiver. What the Taccom plug does is hold the .22 lr carrier in place solidly.

That said I have run my CMMG .22 lr upper with out the pressure plug in the buffer tube and without a spring and buffer in the buffer tube and in both cases it was 100 percent reliable.

The pressure plug definitely helped my CMMG upper be more reliable. They're pretty easy to pop out if you want to run centerfire (if you have a bullet button or similar on that lower, which many rimfire ARs don't.)

With a .22 lr upper the best thing to do is have a dedicated lower for it that way you can have a regular magazine release, and upgrades like a Better-Mag adapter and the pressure plug.

Since the buffer does not move in a rimfire upper, I have had the idea of throwing a rifle length buffer into a car stock to increase the spring preload. Probably would do the same thing as the pressure plug.

Except the spring detente holds the buffer in place.

Only when the action is open. When closed, the buffer retainer is doing nothing.

The .22 BCG can be used with no buffer and spring. It doesn't move past the rear of the upper receiver. The buffer doesn't move forward past the retainer.

Taccom's pressure plug is a cone shape that puts forward pressure against the rear of the .22 BCG.
