WTK What makes a .22 short/.22 long/.22 LR firearm

Is there something different about a firearm that will shoot all as opposed to a .22 LR only?

I have a Taurus 62 pump (copy of a Winchester) it shoots -shorts/Long and Long rifle. Might be something to do with being tube fed.

Different length chambers. A short can handle BB caps, CB caps an shorts. A long can handle those plus long. A LR is a little longer than than a long and can chamber all the aforementioned sizes. When a gun is marked ".22lr only" it had to do with the way it's being fed and/or the power it needs to cycle another rounds if it's a semi auto.

.38 special vs. .357 mag and .44 special vs .44 mag are too other common similar examples of this.

My Henry H001 & my Remington 552 will feed all three mixed up in the magazine (tube) but if you feed either a steady diet of the shorter rounds the longer ones can be tough to feed just like shooting a bunch of 38 Spl then trying a 357 mag, sometimes they need a limitless more thumb to chamber all the way.
I can't think of a detachable magazine rifle that feeds at three.

I have a little Rossi pump take down that will take everything from short to Long Rifle.

Like CSACannoneer said, semi autos are tuned to cycle on LR won't run on lesser power shorts or longs. Also some feed mechanisms won't handle the different length rounds. Those that do when you fire the shorter cases will foul the chamber and then have problems chambering the longer rounds until they are cleaned good. This is true with rim fires as well as center fires.

Basically all straight walled cases that head space on the rim can have shorter or longer version. It is safe to fire the shorter ones in the longer ones chamber but never fire the longer one in a chamber for the shorter one. You can fire shorts, even in a semi auto if you single shot as they won't cycle the action or feed right, but never fire 22LR in a gun marked 22 Short only.

I have a couple of Rossi Pump 62's. One's a carbine and yes they shoot all 3 ammos.
My Remington 552 Speedmaster does as well.

22 semi-autos are built using a blow back system. Unlike a center fire the bolt does not lock into the forward postion. The weight of the bolt keeps it from opening early. The weight is determined by the power of the round. This keeps it from using all 3 22 rounds. In theory you could build a 22 semi-auto with a set of different bolts for all rounds.
