I was wondering if that was the issue. So is there a reason why the end of the barrel couldn't be turned in a lathe to remove the threads? From at least one of the posts above, it seems like there is a need to extend the length of the barrel.

Turning the barrel threads in a lathe is definitely one of a few viable options, and yes, there is a need to extend the length of the barrel. The barrel needs to be 6" long, and the overall length of the pistol needs to be 10.5" long during DROS.

Is that only a requirement for SSE?

My God all these stupid twisted laws are insane. We need a new Constitutional Amendment: if any and all laws or regulations cannot be recited entirely and correctly by every LEO, DA, and judge, then those laws or regulations are automatically nullified.

          No...

The other requirement would be to do something to create a device that only allows you to drop a round into the breech and chamber it, so the gun is only a single shot(that's where the single shot part of single shot exemption comes into play). The barrel length is because SSE also has dimensional requirements. This is why if you go to a shop that does SSE on something like a gen 4 glock, you see a foot long barrel sticking out past the slide.
