Question on Proper Cleaning for .22lr Barrel

I though I read somewhere that you should used slightly undersized jags and brushes for cleaning .22lr barrels-- is that true? Should I buy .20 or .17 jags and brushes?

Is there any other rim fire specific cleaning techniques I should be aware of?

.22 jags and brushes work fine in most .22s, the only exception I'm aware of is with some CZ model rifles with really tight bores - I've seen .22 rods stick in those. On the other hand I recommend using short pistol length brushes when cleaning semiautomatics so that you never have to reverse directions before the brush clears the barrel.

Some barrels are tighter than others. Use whatever fits yours without having to use a lot of force. Also brush from the chamber to the muzzle using a quality brush and a coated one piece rod. This is all imho, ymmv.

another vote for a bore snake, especially with a 22. the only 22 rifle that I don't always use a bore snake would be my CZ, but that is only because it is a bolt and I can access the barrel pretty darn easily.

Beating a dead horse. Bore snake is a great tool to have. Great for any long barreled firearm.

Boresnakes work great! If you run a patch with solvent, it will be a little dirty after using a Boresnakes. But that's fine with me. Quick and less chance of damaging the crown if you have to clean. Rom muzzle end.

I don't use rods or jags of any kind and if you do you should be using a bore guide. Boresnakes are good, Otis pull thru is better and Patchworm is my preference, easier to use, more options for patch types and easiest of the three to use. Downside of Boresnake is that once you use it you need to clean it before the next use or risk putting debris back in the barrel however they are great for quick use at the range or in the field. JMHO.

I don't clean the barrels of my Rimfires unless accuracy falls off. I have thousands of rounds through them with no ill effects. I clean the breech face and chamber with a bent bore brush and Rem-Oil, and run spray dry lube in the trigger groups and the receivers of the semi-auto pistols and rifles. I have not had to break one down for several years, ever since I went the dry lube route. I do use a little TW-25 on the Rimfire bolt guns' bolts.

Patch worm will work for thousands of rounds before you need anything else.
