CZ 455 trigger upgrade & review

After getting my 455 back from the repair shop and verifying that it was fixed (feed jam) I wanted to fix the trigger. The stock trigger was really bad with creep, gritty takeup and about 8lb pull. I upgraded my 452 trainer about a year ago with the same kit and set that trigger at 2lbs. It was very difficult to shoot small clusters with the trigger the way it came on 455.

I ordered the "yodave" trigger kit ($18.00) from yodave on the RFC forums. The kit arrived a few days later and with the wifes 3rd hand I managed to get it installed. The kit comes with 4 springs lighter-->heavier and numerous shim-tubes. WARNING make sure you do not remove the bolt from the gun or the hammer will fall into the breach and the ball bearing will pop out and its difficult to return back to normal.

I used the second to lightest spring and green tube shim. The tube takes the creep out of the trigger and the spring makes it lighter. I now have a 1lb trigger that is as good as it gets.

I tested the gun with the bolt cocked and safety on. I butted the rifle against the floor several times and also tapped the butt with a rubber mallet with both safety on and off. The trigger held and it did not fire. This test is critical after replacing parts to determine that the gun will be safe. The last thing you want is a rifle that fires itself with a bump.

All in all the yodave kit is easy to install and leaves you with a great trigger. I can now divide the red dot into four equal quarters and barely touch the trigger to place the round inside the red circle every time. The wifes groups with the rifle shrunk about 400% from the last weekend when the trigger was at 8lbs.

The yodave is a great trigger fix at a great price.

The Yo Dave kit is good but a little expensive. I went a little different route with my CZ's. I went to Fastenal and bought 4 different springs. The 159-A is the lightest, the next three, 160-A, 161-A, and 162-A are progressively heavier, with the 162-A being around 1.5 lbs. I also use an adjustable sear in mine which does away with all of the creep. All of mine are used shooting from a bench so they are between 4 ozs all the way to 12 ozs.

You can also go to an Ace Hardware store and get the 144 spring and do almost the same thing as the Yo Dave kit.

Once you get all the bugs worked out of that 455 you will love it.

You must have better luck than me. I have to go to 3 hardware stores to find what I need and burn half the day. Thats a 1/2 tank of gas and lunch. I consider 15 dollars cheap.

Where did you buy the shim-tubes?

I don't use shim tubes, I made my sear adjustable. A lot of folks use the PMTJ(poor mans trigger job) but I found it just as easy to have the sear adjustable, so if I decide to hunt with it I can back the sear off a little, tighten the nut on the trigger spring, and I'm ready to go.

I have the same kit in my cz452. Definitely helped to make the trigger even sweeter. Mine is probably somewhere around 2.5 lbs but I am also not using the lightest spring either.

I bought a few kits and they work great. My only gripe was trying to tell the difference between purple and black - or maybe it was maroon & black. Or, maybe I shouldn't do trigger work by the TV at the edge of the bed at 3 in the morning .....

I have a 455 Varmint and American...haven't done any trigger rework yet, but the Varmint's trigger does indeed feel like a guesstimated 6~8lbs while the American feels closer to 4lbs...both have some creep. I have yet to find the appropriate fastenal, ace, hillman, or century spring anywhere near-by...wasted a day & gas, too. Looks like Yo Dave kits will be in my future.

The Varmint has a fch/dot target scope and is a dedicated bench rifle and the American has a 3-9x33 AO duplex scope and will be used for unsupported/offhand shooting...both for paper/steel shooting. Present POIs are basically 1" (sometimes less) @ 50yds with Federal Automatch as I get used to the rifles/glass...and deal with their less than perfect triggers.

Neat rifles....I know they'll (and I) will be even better once I get the triggers to where I want them to be...no creep and the lightest pull while still being safe. I also smoothed the bolt's action by cycling each about 500 times with nothing but a slathering of froglube on the bolts and a thorough careful cleaning of the factory preservatives before sending its first rounds. Flawless with no ftf/fte using the CZ mags that are available (5rd poly, 5rd metal, 10rd poly...have several of each) while shooting an estimated 600rds that we're sent through each rifle. I'm really liking these rifles

I'd rather have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

This is the one that I used to get a 4 oz trigger. I visited the Fastenal store and had the nice gentleman to look this one up and also got the next 3 in a row.(160-A, 161-A,and 162-A) These will give a very light trigger, but that is what you need if shooting from a bench. The Yo Dave kits have heavier springs than these.
