.22 Ranges

Hi guys, I'm a newbie on Calguns. This is a great, informative resource and a big thanks to all who participate!

I seem to remember a few years ago that some of the local SoCal ranges had dedicated .22/airgun nights. Does anyone know if that is still the case?

I'd love to teach my son to shoot a .22, but I'm afraid the noise from adjacent shotguns and high powered rifles might be too much for him. I really want his first experience with firearms to be enjoyable, not just tolerable.

http://www.shootprado.com/ Their rifle range is rimfire only and goes up to 50 yards. They have decent shooting benches too. They only allow paper targets at this range.

As a newer shooter(not that young) , i actually find the muzzle blasts as part of the experience of shooting , but since it sounds like he is just a kid i understand where your coming from.

I am not aware of any dedicated nights other than maybe a dedicated rimfire match day where teaching may or may not be an option. My solution to you is find a range that has a pistol / low caliber rifle range for .22lr rifles and handguns only a "plinker" section (if you will) with steels since there should not be a high powered rifles in this section you should be good to go and get the added benefit of it being a steels section a kid would probably enjoy it alot more (plink) then target shooting papers.

And you might want to post a general location so other members can suggest a range for you in your more immediate area that suits your needs.

But here is my suggestion http://www.aplacetoshoot.net/a-place...ed-firing-line - that is the range i am talking about , this is where i go when i don't want to be put together with higher caliber guns and just want to do some plinking. Not the nicest range in my area but i enjoy it alot , and it's alittle off the beaten path so to speak.(you probally won't get cell service or radio in your car i don't). But it is a great range the staff are pretty cool and is a cheap entrance fee for all the ranges for the day.

Thanks to you both for the quick replies. My son is only 8, and I'm concerned that the "boom" from larger rifles will be a problem. Some kids aren't bothered by the noise, others are. It just depends.

I simply want the experience to be low-stress and fun, and someone blasting off an old Mauser a few feet away can be distracting to say the least.

I'm located in the Inland Empire/eastern LA County region if that helps. Prado sounds like a good option. Again, thanks!

BTW, call prado ahead of time. Sometimes they will use the rifle range for matches or police training.

You could get a couple friends and rent a private range at Burro Canyon. That would at least give you some distance from the large caliber guns that are being shot on the rifle and handgun/rimfire/shotgun range.

Is the range at Prado a combined rimfire/pistol range?

That's the impression I got from the website, but it wasn't totally clear.

If the rifle range is closed, they will have you shoot at the pistol range. The rifle range is separate from the pistol range. The rifle range is fairly quiet. That's why you should call before going.
