Building a .22 AR?

Hi all:

I am going to help my father in law build a .22 AR. We have 80% lowers, we are doing the CNC, engraving and Cerakote. Are there any differences between building a .22 AR as opposed to any other caliber?

We have the lower, buy a standard LPK, buffer, stock and then a .22 AR upper? What about the mag well, do most of the .22 uppers feed from a special magazine that fits into a standard lower mag well? Anything else I need to be aware of? I have never shot a .22 AR and I have seen plenty of them in real life but I don't really know much about building one. I have built regular ARs so it can't be that difficult.

Oh, yeah, any recommendations for the best .22 upper?

The magazines in most common use are the BDM.

Looks and fit like AR magazine.

Had a spikes tactical .22 lr upper, it was fun to shoot, very accurate. 22 barrel goes in about 1 inch inside chamber, so standard 16" appeared to be 14.5 M4. Spikes doesn't make 22lr uppers anymore.

These days if you want something prices moderately CMMG is way to go.

.22 AR uppers will fit a standard lower.
Taccom and CMMG are the best when it comes to reliability and cost.

I wouldn't recommend the Chiappa.

I agree that Black Dog Machine mags are the most common and easiest to find. I recommend the BDM X mags.

Another set up does involve the S & W mags and Redi Mag insert which gives you last round bolt lock back.

I built one recently with a cmmg light weight upper with standard bolt on a standard lower. The only other thing is make sure to get the taccom reliability kit. (pressure plug, extractor and firing pin). I had about 40 light strikes the first 100 rounds amd said enough for one day. Put the taccom kit in and it runs flawlessly now about 2000 rounds. I also use bdm xform mags and the cmmg bhoa.

You don't really need the buffer or buffer spring on a dedicated .22LR build. I just glued a wooden dowel in my receiver extension since I never plan to convert it to centerfire and I didn't want the rifle to magically convert to centerfire in a police evidence locker.

I have a spikes barrel and bolt. I purchased a complete upper from the a few years ago and but a different barrel on the upper. Pm me if interested

Here's the one I just finished last month. CMMG conversion with barrel, s&w upper, and lower, black dog mags, YHM free float tube, BSA red-dot.

Not too much. I ordered mine in early July, got it in early August.

Dunno about being backed up, but they are in stock at a lot of places. I have seen the 20" Gov Profile, 16" M4, and Lightweight uppers in stock in the past few days at various places.

Check the usual places - Brownells, Cabela's, Midway...

I don't know if the prices are the best here right now. When I got mine it was $382 here. The 20" Gov Profile with front sight and flat top looks awesome for $399.

CMMG is the way to go for .22 lr uppers. Two things: You don't need a bullet button and you need to run a standard GI trigger, light triggers like Timney don't have enough hammer force to pop the primers on 22 lr.(I have tried it).

There are two kinds of magazines you can use with a CMMG .22 lr upper. You can use Black Dog machine magazines which fit into a standard AR15 lower magazine well. You can also buy a Better-Mag conversion kit to put in your lower allowing you to use S&W M&P15-22 mags. With this system you have a operational bolt release to allow more realistic training. I am going from the Black Dog Machine magazines to the Better-Mag/M&P15-22 system with my CMMG .22 lr rifle.

Cmmg is solid, Taccom is arguably the leader in my book, killer service and the most solid looking bolt I've seen.


Stay far away from a Chiappas, far far away! Seriously if you're considering one, ill be the first to throw a virtual slap to help bring you back.
