Any good ranges to shoot rimfire or trap in the San Jose Area?

I'll be there in a couple of weeks on business.

Several spots:

Santa Clara County Field Sports Park has it all (aka "Metcalf"; probably your best choice in terms of all around accessibility since its just on the south side of San Jose): http://www.sccgov.org/sites/parks/Pl...orts-Park.aspx

Los Altos Rod and Gun Club also has it all (this is lots of fun with a rimfire. They have a tin can range at 40 and 100 yards; rapid fire with rimfires on the 40 is allowed! At around 45 mins from down town SJ, its a haul to get there though.): http://www.losaltosrodandgunclub.com/

Coyote Valley Sporting Clays (no rifle range; trap, skeet and sporting clays only. Also worth stopping just to check out the shottys in their gun vault. They have probably the best most complete higher end trap/skeet specific selection in the south bay): http://www.coyoteclays.com/

Reed's Indoor Range (paper targets out to 25 yards only. I know you said outdoor but this is a good little spot with a nice gunshop attached): http://www.reedsindoorrange.com/

If you're willing to travel to beautiful Monterey (90mins south of downtown SJ), the range at Laguna Seca isn't to be missed (no clays). Steel out to 300 and 500 yards!: http://www.co.monterey.ca.us/parks/l...eca_rifle.html

Sunnyvale R&G has what you seek (Trap range & Rimfire) - Open to the public Tu & Fri last time I checked.

I'd take the 5. Not drive up coast.

So if I drive up the 5, is there anywhere about 1/2 way from LA to San Jose I can stop for a break and shoot? Any must see places?

BLM land about 100 miles south of San Jose, search Calguns for Tumey Hills. Tumey is like 2 miles off the highway, Panoche is about 15 mins, and you may want a car with some decent ground clearance. Panoche is closed for fire season, but should be lifting by Mid-October.

There's a rifle range in Coalinga, never been, but you can look that up too.

Lost altos is the nicest outdoor one open to the public, but farthest off the freeway. Metcalf county range is the easiest to get to, but can get really crowded on weekends

Los Altos and Laguna Seca also get crowded on weekends. Best bet is to show up between 9 and 10 am

Metcalf Range 7miles south of San jose (city limits)
Flat rate fee for all day $15-$16
Down side is Super busy on weekends

Laguna Seca 45min-1hr south of San jose
1st hour flat rate,then changes to increments of 15 min charges
Kind of like airport parking :-/
Weeknds open 9am

Livermore-Pleasanton rod,bow, gun club
Approx 1hr Northeast of san jose
Personally, i like this range between the 3 (i rotate between them)
In 1 lane you can shoot pistol(s) and rifles,targets placement your choice
15yrd iirc, 25yrd,50 yrds & 100yards
$15 lane rental

Fyi the last weekend of September (this weekend) range probably will be
Closed due to Super Bike event fri-sun LAGUNA SECA
