stuck bolt release first day ruger takedown

    Hi all,

Had a good first day with a new takedown. When I picked up the rifle the bolt locked back, I inspected the rifle, took it down, put it back in bag and took it home. A few days later I went to the range, adjusted the rifle as instructed by the manual, although I did not dry cycle. I loaded the magazine released the bolt and fired with only one issue. Through 120 rds of cci 40 grain round nose the bolt would not lock once. I had to hold the bolt back to take down the rifle when I was finished. Any suggests on what is or what I was doing wrong? The guy at the range could not offer any advice.

    Thanks, Saddleback

    Hmmm...
The 10/22 is not designed to lock back the bolt when the last round is fired.
The manual bolt lock can be awkward to use until you figure out how to push on it.

      RTFM.

10/22 does not lock back the bolt on firing the last round.

On the takedown, the bolt is supposed to be back before you take it apart. If you look on your barrel end when it is apart there is a little notch where your extractor sits when its together and bolt forward. You can't twist it to take it apart when the bolt is forward and the extractor is sitting in the notch.

To be more clear, I was trying to get the bolt to lock after emptying the mag. I am betting I was not using the manual bolt lock correctly. It seemed it could not be moved.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I will check it out tomorrow.

It's a weird motion on the 10/22 to get the bolt to lock.

Once I dremeled out the point on that heart shaped cutout, locking the bolt couldn't be easier.

Check out rimfire central for what to grind off from where.

With the bolt back you need to rock the bolt stop forward just a little then back and up. Then release the bolt forward while holding the bolt stop in the rearward and up position. It sounds complicated, but after you do it a few times it becomes second nature.

He...heh yeh it's a pain and sounds more complicated than its supposed to be. Think of it like a manual trigger. Pull the bolt all the way back then squeeze it then let the bolt go = locked back. Pull the bolt all the way back push the stop up and forward and hold it, release bolt = unlocked forward. Watch the movement while you're doing it. It just rocks up and down on a pivot point.

When I got mine at first I thought there was something wrong with the bolt lock. But once you get the hang of it, it works. It's not the best design, in my opinion. I have gotten used to it.

Exact same thing happened to me when I went to the range with it the first time. Felt like an idiot until I figured it out after 5 minutes of fumbling around with the release.
