    .22 Cal. MP-5

There are two manufactures from what I understand, is there a quality difference?

I have an Umarex .22 Cal Uzi and love it, they make one of the MP-5's, who is the other manufacturer and how do they compare vs the Umarex MP-5

The GSG is a cheap .22lr inside a plastic shell that looks a bit like a MP5

The Walther HK MP5, imported by Umarex is a purposely designed exact copy of the HK. It can utilize real HK furniture if you want. Has an adjustable gas system allowing fine tuning of the bolt speed which offers reliable feed/extraction cycling. It has a match grade barrel inside a steel sleeve. Its designed to be cleaned with a can of compressed air.

The GSG is not even in the same league as the Walther. That's why there is a huge price difference.

I was selling one, but I'm now keeping it.

I’ll play devils advocate just for fun…

I bought a GSG-552 a couple weeks because I wanted a fun 22 rifle to plink around with up in the mountains with my Uncle and his friend who have a MP 15-22 and SIG 22. The rifle I purchased had all of the desirable upgrades wanted for a GSG, and the seller included some extras like a TRS-25 red dot. You can co-witness the red dot through the rear aperture perfectly with the front post, but I choose to remove the front post so I could see the 2in targets easier.

I’ve shot the GSG a few times and haven’t had any issues with the rifle. I don’t plan on shooting further out than 25yrds, so a match barrel wasn’t necessarily high on my priority list. Although a match barrel would have been nice the rifle is far more accurate then I could of imagined at 25 yrds. So much so that I was shooting a ragged hole on the shoot-n-see 2in targets with ease

The trigger leaves much to be desired, and a lot of people complain that it feels “mushy.” The best way I can describe the pull/break is that it requires quite a bit of take up before the actual break, but the reset is short so I really don’t notice it.

Either way the HK’s are going for about $500 from what I can see, and the GSG’s are anywhere between $330-$450. Like the two before me have said the HK is of higher quality, but with that being said the GSG doesn’t feel flimsy or finiky. It actually has quite a bit of weight to it, which is surprising.

As a word of advice, shooting these off a bench is tuff since the mag props the rifle up quite high. Also using the collapsible stock as a cheek rest can be uncomfortable. If you can find a GSG for cheap I would pick it up since I don’t think you're planning on shooting any matches with it. However, going with the HK is a great decision.

Guess it just depends on what you plan to do with the rifle…

Price more like $450 for new GSG vs a Walther Umarex I found for NIB $499, I have an Uzi from Umarex and love it. Thanks for the advice but leaning toward Umarex.

Yes that does sound like an exact copy /sarcasm

That said, the Walther is indeed the better replica and much easier to disassemble and maintain. GSG gets credit for proving the validity of the .22lr replica concept which led to the lawsuit with HK which led to Walther/Umarex getting the rights to use the HK logo and their superior version.

I think Umarex MP-5 superiority over GSG-5 is greatly exaggerated in this thread.

I had GSG-5D for last couple years and I never had any problems with mine, nor have I read many complaints about them on the internet.

It is well build, reasonably accurate and reliable plinker and thats it. If I where looking to buy another MP-5 look alike, I'd buy it again. (I actually had two of GSG-5Ds, but traded one for Ruger MKII Slabsides.) I would not pay premium for Umarex, both are just plinkers.

I would not take either squirrel hunting. I'd rather use one of mine 10/22s or bolt actions that will give me better accuracy.

I use my CZ 452 Varmint if I'm looking for accuracy, I have fired an MP-5 and HK-94 plus Uzi in 9MM. I find the Umarex Uzi is a close match to my Uzi 9MM as are the Umarex MP-5's I have held so for 50 bucks I think it's a no brainer going with Umarex.

                      Thanks for the comments.

i've had my eye on one of these for a while, so thanks all for the information. are there any state compliance issues to be aware of, e.g., OAL with the collapsible stock?

also, can anyone recommend a source for blocked magazines and/or magblocks for the umarex? i understand the magazines used by these two guns aren't interchangable.

IMO the gsg model is a cheap plastic gun. The Umarex hk mp5 is a very well built gun. Go to big5 and handle both of them and you will see.
