OP what kind of customized upper do you really want? Do you want to a build where you hand pick every single part of the upper or do you just want to add your own parts like rails, sights, CH?

I had a chiappas and it ran great, one time at the range. 200 shots then the bolt fell apart. Went through another and sold it. Decided to build a dedicated upper myself and had an extra chiappas bolt lying around. Dpms upper, taccom barrel 7 inch quadrail. Never shot right, would leave the range having slung the same amount of lead down range as on the range table due to ftf, Fte's. Contacted Tim at Taccom and he sold me a bolt group. I've seen plenty of conversions, but this things is pretty. Well built, solid and NiB coated. Glad to say the first range trip yielded two ftf's due to super colibri ammo out of 450 and various types of ammo loaded. Next dedicated build will use a taccom complete upper.

Tim at Taccom is a great option for uppers and parts... I highly recommend him.

Midway has one dedicated bolt/barrel set left on sale. Add your own upper, charging handle, foreend, sights and so forth. They've gone up a lot, when I bought mine the sale price was just over $200.
I'm retired. That's right, retired. I don't want to hear about the cop who stopped you today or how you didn't think you should get a ticket. That just makes me grumpy!

Well I want to build a .22 ar for two reasons. I want a .22 semi auto, and I also want a lower receiver in case our wonderful state decides to outlaw ar15's. What I'm trying to do is build a quality .22ar for the least money. The cmmg is the cheapst known quality product and it runs $400. Knowing I could grab an entire 10/22 for $250ish, my cheap sensibilities are telling me I'm being taken for a ride. To boot, my wife is putting her foot down on my budget, so I thought I could build my own for less, which is looking like it isn't the case. Not too concerned about hand pickingmy dream upper or anything.

I was set on the chiappa, I know people have had some complaints but a friend has one and he's had no issues. Thought I might be able to build my own for not much more but it's not looking that way. Cmmg is about $380 and the chiappa, can be had for $270. Oh well, hopefully I don't get a dud. Was looking for used but for some reason people are asking over new retail for their used uppers...not sure what's up with that. I guess it's like the guys you see on craigslist selling their 5yr old LCD tv for $300.
The difference between a chiappa upper and cmmg upper is like comparing a pinto to a ferrari. I would try and save up for the cmmg if possible.

The cmmg is the standard for quality in the 22 game, and chiappa is the direct opposite. For 100 dollars difference there is no comparison. Don't skimp on this purchase. Just my .02

Here's what I bought for my dedicated upper build.

Got a used m&p upper for $40 (basically looked new), and a free float fore end tube that came with a barrel nut at joebob outfitters:

And a run of the mill muzzle device.

I also added a front gas block (even though it is not needed) to attach iron sights or a flashlight, laser, etc.
                Sorry, not sorry.
                🎺

Dear autocorrect, I'm really getting tired of your shirt!
