    Questions about new ruger 10/22

Hey guys I picked up my brand new ruger from turners yesterday. I was so excited to join the 22 club. I got the wood stock one because it matches my mini 14 stock, so now it looks like father like son. I took it apart which was more complicated than I though it would be.

Some questions about it, when I rack the bolt back it feels like there are two stages. For the first half it feels fine and then the second half feels a tad bit different. Is there something wrong? Also I have a gap between the end of the receiver and the wood stock, is this normal? Its not a huge gap. I am adding a picture for you guys and hopefully you can see what I am saying. Last question has anyone had any experience with the M1 carbine stock you can get for it? I think it looks really cool but want to know what you guys think.

    Thank you,
    Walter

Yes, the bolt has a "2 stage" feel to it,, not a problem, and the stock is usually a little higher that the receiver in that area,, now go play with it. Try a few different brands to find out which it likes most, and there may a "breakin" period where it could be a little finicky. Enjoy.

        Congrats on your new rifle!

Rub a little brown Kiwi shoe polish on the wood in that gap and then forget all about it.

Also a warning: The Ruger 10/22 naturally attracts aftermarket parts due to a special magnetic polarity in the receiver.

Some gap in the back is normal. Yours looks to be on the larger side of normal, but still nothing to worry about. If it bothers you, you could either sand it down more flush and refinish the stock, or replace the stock (as you apparently are already considering).

AKS-762s warning is well-taken. Aftermarket parts galore await you! LOL

I just shot my new 10/22 and it didn't want to eject spent cases consistently. I've read a few posts that say you have to break it in before things settle down. Any thoughts on that from you 10/22 veterans?
If you buy anything because it has "tactical" or "operator" in the name, we probably don't run in the same circles.

I am excited and my 1022 is already attracting after market parts.

Here, I posted this recently so I'll copy it here:

Four inexpensive things worth doing to every 10/22. (the list if different if you're serious about competition or hardcore upgrades, but these make a big difference to every 10/22)

                1) Aftermarket recoil buffer pin. (The simple plastic ones are fine, like from Speed Beez, the Kidd ones are better, either is fine) $10 or less.

                2) Aftermarket magazine release button. Speed Beez. (Volquartsen is good too but overkill for a simple part) $16

                3) Send your trigger group to Brimstone for a tier 3 trigger job. $35.

                4) Adding swivels for a sling is a good idea, too. Uncle Mike's kits work well and are easy to install. (I prefer the wider 1.25" slings but Amazon doesn't seem to carry that version... they're widely available, normally). Under $12.

Many people will tell you the auto bolt release is a must, too, but I never found it necessary. RTFM and practice a few times and you'll learn to use the factory release just fine. If you decide you want the mod, and can handle using a small file (a couple bucks at Harbor Freight if you don't have one), the stock part is super easy to modify yourself, just file off one little metal bit and you're set. Note that Brimstone will do this for you as part of the trigger job, unless you ask them not to. So definitely no need to spend more money on a new part unless you're ignoring my earlier advice.

And if you want to accurize & fancy-up your bolt, you can send it to Que's for an awesome spa treatment...

I'm thinking about the $55 rework and jeweling package, but I'm building a target gun.

I have decided to cease doing any work for now. With a full time job and this I find that this is all I do. I will continue to warranty any and all work that I have done. All is well here I assure you. Just found that sometimes certain things are best. When/should the status change I'll be sure to

Que's work is well-respected, but overkill for a casual shooter. That said, I heard on RFC that he wasn't taking more work at the moment due to some personal issues. Is he back working again?

Hey guys thanks alot. I plan on keeping it stock for now. Although I am finding that having one isnt enough lol. I mainly got it to teach my son and daughter how to shoot rifles properly. But man oh man 1022's are just so much fun. The thing that sucks is ammo isnt cheap like it used to be or as available.

Ammo is available at decent if not pre-Obama-panic prices. Shooting a .22 is still one of the cheapest ways to have a great time that I know of.

Kids usually just love .22s and you are likely to turn them into shooters.

Most 10/22s rarely have ejection or feeding issues. If yours does try different ammo and be sure that the gun is clean and lubed.

One thing to do that doesn't cost money or more parts is to take out the trigger group, bolt and charging handle and take scotch brite to the underside of the receiver. Scotch brite will smooth out the imperfections and tooling marks, overspray crud so that the bolt will slide better and it helps with the FTEs you may experience with a new gun.

My new rifle was a jam o matic, FTF and FTE guaranteed in ten rounds, did the scrubbing and it was totally different. Tonight I went into the chamber and hand polished it.
