No need for a bullet button on a .22 AR?

Does anyone know why a semi-auto AR chambered in .22LR does not need at bullet button type locking device in CA?

If I use a .22 upper on my standard lower, does that mean I can remove mu bullet button and go with a standard mag release?

    Thanks.

you must read and understand what features makes a firearm an assault weapon

    they have 3 types listed

    rifles
    pistols
    shotguns

    they have different specifications

This is how the AWB reads for rifles:
30515. (a) Notwithstanding Section 30510, "assault weapon" also
      means any of the following:
      (1) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has the capacity to
accept a detachable magazine and any one of the following:
      (A) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action
      of the weapon.
      (B) A thumbhole stock.
      (C) A folding or telescoping stock.
      (D) A grenade launcher or flare launcher.
      (E) A flash suppressor.
      (F) A forward pistol grip.
      (2) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has a fixed magazine
with the capacity to accept more than 10 rounds.
      (3) A semiautomatic, centerfire rifle that has an overall length
      of less than 30 inches.
Notice it says semiautomatic centerfire rifle each time.
      Therefore:
If your rifle is not semiautomatic then it does not need to have a fixed magazine.
If your rifle is not centerfire then it does not need to have a fixed magazine.

      Also:
Even if your centerfire rifle has no features then it does not need to have a fixed magazine.

I don't know the answer, but I am gonna go out on a limb and say the CA govt doesn't understand what the difference in ammo is, and probably doesn't give a phuck...

          Bullet button either way.

To clarify, a mag lock is not needed on a .22lr semi-auto rifle with or without "evil features".

Rimfires are exempt from the AW stuff here in Cali.

I looked into this a while back as well. You need a multicaliber lower, and no bullet button was required. Have some documentation with you at all times, just because AR's will always attract attention at the range.

Up until last week rimfires were included in SB374. They are safe for now but you can be they will be back for them next year or the year after that.

I just reread my post too and it might be confusing to some since I added the "also" part. That was directed to centerfire rifles. Was just trying to say all the rifle types that don't need fixed magazines.

But you make an excellent point because since rimfire are not "semiautomatic centerfire" they can have any and all features. And do not need an OAL of 30 inches. They default to Federal 26 inches OAL.

                        Not exactly.
                        Rimfire is not "exempt"
Rimfire rifles are not listed. There is a difference.
If you look at the AWB when it comes to pistols it only says "semiautomatic pistol" therefore it includes both centerfire and rimfire.

                        Caliber markings have no bearing.
You could have a drop in rimfire bolt in a 5.56 marked lower and a 5.56 upper and not run a fixed magazine. With the rimfire bolt it is not a centerfire rifle.
If you go to put a centerfire bolt into it then you need a fixed magazine. This is where a changeable position lock such as a Raddlock would be handy.
Just make sure to change it to the locked position before you remove the rimfire bolt.

Again if it is not a semiautomatic centerfire rifle then it does not need to have a fixed magazine under CA AWB.

                          Don't spread FUD.

If a rimfire upper is attached, the lower DOES NOT need a bullet button.

I understand what you're saying, and don't disagree. However this is where it does get into a gray area; it could be argued by a D.A. that the rifle is chambered for a centerfire cartridge (the actual chamber of the barrel accommodates a 5.56 and it says so on the barrel) you're just running an adapter in it.

I personally will not run a .22lr conversion unit (as opposed to a .22lr dedicated upper) on a non bullet buttoned or otherwise exempt rifle out of an abundance of caution; YMMV and I understand those willing to do so.

Yup, definitely use a dedicated .22lr upper, not a conversion kit if not using a mag lock.
