26405. Section 26400 does not apply to, or affect, the carrying of an unloaded firearm that is not a handgun in any of the following circumstances:

    (c) When the firearm is either in a locked container or encased and it is being transported directly between places where a person is not prohibited from possessing that firearm and the course of travel shall include only those deviations between authorized locations as are reasonably necessary under the circumstances.
So you could not throw your 22 rifle in the car BEFORE work and go to the range AFTER work, correct?

I always lock my long guns in a case when transporting them even though it is not legally required. That way if I ever get stopped by a cop he cannot easily handle the weapon.

Plus it shows that I am being careful. Plus it is easy to do.

People often forget that putting one of those lock things on your firearm has no legal significance when transporting it, either for a handgun or a long gun. At most these locks serve to childproof your firearms at home.
