Ruger quality control or lack there of!

When I received my newest 10/22 I noticed light areas in the wood. I mentioned to someone it looked like they stained it with the BBl band and butt plate already installed. That idea was poo pooed until I took it apart today and found this:

I was kind of surprised with these findings, but now understand what others have mentioned about the Ruger 10/22 wood finish. This is the Standard model even comes with a tiny bubble in the painted on receiver finish, Wow Ruger where have you gone????

Just contact them. Maybe they'll send you a new one without having to return that one you already have

My 20 yr old 10-22 is not stained very well on the inside, under the bbl rec, but it still shoots great

Not staining the butt plate or inside area is typical but the missed area by the rifle band is a quality issue, although the band should cover it..

Word for the wise don't let any thing touch that stock finish other than water, cause it will just eat right through.

I had to refinish my stock after one range trip, oil and cleaner tore into the finish like scissor cuts paper.

I might try that, I do have an ATI adjustable folder for it anyway. I'll have to dig out my old 10/22 and see how it compares.

Whatever they use to finish the stock is quite thin so I'm not surprised that just about anything will eat through it. At least it's smooth

I seem to recall that for the past 20 years the sale price of the 10/22 is almost the same.

During the crush we have seen since December, that is not a big deal.

When Ruger announced that they were no longer accepting back orders it was a clue to me that they were overwhelmed and running as much volume as possible.

In 1994, a lot of junk was sold.

The most important question- how does it shoot????
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
              (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

I always thought the 10/22 was pretty cheap and rough...fit and finish was inexpensive. But they usually shoot good.

Fit and finish goes way up when you replace every part with aftermarket stuff. I think my receiver is still Ruger.

The wood stock, barrel, band, receiver finish, bolt machining, heavy gritty trigger, jenky mag release, etc... always seems ROUGH. But when they were $129 it was fine.

My old wood stock is in a closet, but now I am curious to remove the butt plate and see what's up under there.

I only buy Ruger 10/22's for the receiver, bolt and trigger housing. Everything else gets removed/sold. Even if you were to keep the rifle stock, it would be a non issue. The receiver and barrel band covers it.

Saw that laser sight bbl band combo at Cabelas today that Ruger is putting on one of their models, Cabelas wants $199. My local FFL has the complete rifle and laser set for $399, can't remember if it was stainless or blued though.

Yeah it's hiding in the garage until I get time to swap the stock for the ATI and the TECH sights.

I believe I bought mine new about 8 years ago, still had the factory metal trigger group. Replace the bolt and charge handle with KIDD ones just cuz, not out of necessity, other then that its all stock. One of the most reliable, and fun rifles I own. It looks identical to yours in all the same places. If your looking for a show rig your going to swap all that out anyway right?

                              Im confused!

If you lift the hood or trunk of your car the paint there is not the same as the rest of the body either. Should all of american return their cars?
