    Ammo Possession - Dumb Question

Are there any rules about where you can legally store/possess live ammo? Can I keep it in my car so I can use at range? Does it need to be in locked box? I don't own a firearm yet.

Im not 10000% sure, but I think you can keep it in the car, however you want.

It may not be prudent to do so because of the heat, and the coppers may question why you have it.

I put my ammo in a safe, that is cool and dry. with dessicant packs.

What? There is only one reason to have ammo... to shoot. I have ammo in my truck glove box at least twice a week, the only reason I don't leave it on my seat is cause I don't want it to get stolen while I am at work.

Really, I preserve my ammo as a remnant of the past, a time when we could shoot. One day in a museum to be looked at by future generations.

You can not store ammo inside your firearm when the firearm is in your car.

(It has to be transported unloaded.)

Otherwise, you can keep the ammo whereever. For instance, I have a bag that has pouches for magazines and keep the mags topped off inside the pouches with my AR .22 in another part of the bag (and of course put that in my trunk.)

As long as the loaded magazine isn't in the firearm, you're good to go. However, lots of people recommend keeping the ammo stored in a place where people can't see it. In case you're pulled over, (while it is legal) its better to not have ammo laying around on the backseat, etc.

I try to always keep some spent brass rolling around on the dash to spice up DUI checkpoint stops.

But no, a car isn't a very good place to store ammo for the long term(heat as already mentioned), but it's not a legal problem as long as you don't also happen to have a loaded firearm.

Get one of those "Come and take it" AR-15 stickers on your window and tell the cop who asks you for your license that "you know your constitutional rights" for some additional fun.

IIRC, you may not have live ammunition on school property. That would include your car on a campus parking lot, no?
