Need help from those who own a Savage MarkII

I have a Savage Mark II TR inbound and was curious about the two piece scope mount that is already on it.

Is that two piece mount crap?
How hard is it to change?

I've been looking at the DIP products upgrades for it and might go with one of those depending on the answers for the above questions.

I've also seen mention of people changing out the bottom metal since the stock bottom metal is thin. Something about not being able to torque action screws as much???

What does that mean? Why does it matter?

I've already got a Harris 6"-9" swivel bi-pod with pod lock, A Mueller APT 4.5-14x40AO scope and Burris Xtreme tactical low rings that will go on it.

Lastly, anyone ever heard of a stock pack that is made for rimfire?

Not sure how important the pouches are to you or if you just want a way to adjust the comb height (they also make a comb height kit), but I always go with these because my brother shoots lefty.

So the scope mount is easy to swap out then?

What is the issue with the bottom metal that people are swapping out with DIP products version?

Stock everything on mine. Harris bipod. Accu trigger on full light.
Brick after brick its perfect. I haven't "heard" of problems due to not looking for them. No need to.
          That's just me.

The stock bottom metal is thin stamped metal. The DIP bottom metal is thick and will allow for proper torqueing without it bending. I'd recommend if you plan on shooting anything more than 100 yards to get the 20MOA DIP one piece scope mount.

              Proper torquing for what?

The 20 MOA mount won't affect closer ranges like 50 yards and below will it?

I have a MK II BV and found that there is a bit of barrel droop associated with this rifle. I had to shim the rear mount to get my scope to optically zero at 50 yards. I used two pieces of coke can and punched a hole in them with paper hole punch and mounted them clear side down . the clear side has a plastic coating that will isolate the aluminum from the steel. I would not have shimmed any more than this however for fear of crimping a scope tube. I also chose to make a cheek riser with a 3/4 " piece of PVC pipe cut in half longitudinally, with a piece of foam backpackers sleeping pad under it. I wrapped the above with 3M vetwrap self adhering bandage wrap to secure it and give me a soft cloth exterior. Total cost, about $3.00 I haven't tried the DIP metal, but from what I understand, the Mk II's are finicky about stock bolt torque and how it affects accuracy. I haven't had any problems with accuracy other than my own mistakes.

What is the distance you guys are shooting at with these rifles? How far out past 100 yards?

I have three of them and use the stock mounts on all.
Just a hundred yards so for.

I have a mk2-tr and took the stock two piece bases off and replaced it with a EGW one piece 20moa base. I used Brownells glass bed to bed the base even though it was pretty flat to begin with. The rifle will use the same one piece base part number as the model 93. It is definitely one of the favorite firearms I own. It has no recoil and will shoot nickel sized 10 shot groups at 50 yards with decent lead round nose target ammo (ie. wolf match, Remington target rifle, and sk standard plus). If you haven't done so order a few extra 10 round magazines so reloading the 5 round one doesn't become a chore.

I haven't needed to buy a new bottom metal for mine yet and don't torque the action screws much.

I have shot mine out to 150 yards to knock off the turkeys at Pala standing unsupported and the chicks at 50 were no match to my girlfriend. Each shot smacked down another chick and put a huge smile on her face. I better not let her shoot it or she will steal it from me! I am happy I sold my 10/22 to fund this rifle. I am even having thoughts of buying a 93R17-TR. If you don't like yours let me know, my girlfriend might want to buy it off you.
