Take off "gas block" on CMMG sierra 22lr upper?

I have CMMG upper that I'm going to put a freefloat rail on. Since there is no gas tube running to the railed front gas block, it seems like I could remove it and just put a longer rail on.

Anyone tried running the cmmg upper without the "gas block"? Any reason not to do this?

I have a different brand upper that is similar. I use the gas block for front sights. No reason to actually keep it as it serves no function. The upper will look good with a longer free float tube.

It is fastened by set screws and easy to remove. Its primary function is to retain the handguard. You can move it forward of your rail if you want or remove it completely. No issues.

Thanks. Going to free float it tonight and didn't think there was any issues, but I figured you guys know better.

Will definitely post pics when done.

As stated, it's only function is to mount a front sight and keep the hand guard cap in place.
Should be easy to sell too.
It will not work for a 5.56 as it is not drilled with a gas port.

Cool, post pics, and accuracy results with the free float rail once you have a chance to shoot it.

              9" Midwest industries freefloat
              Spikes fake suppressor
              CMMG sierra upper
              New Frontier Lower
              Primary arms red dot

(first pic has a magpul 30rd rebuild in it for fun)

Nice setup! Gotta luv the CMMG's!

Is that Spike's fake suppressor the one that mounts reversed over the barrel?

Yep, it works as a barrel shroud too.
