I have a TD and love it. If you can afford both the takedown is very nice. There are not a lot of aftermarket stocks but everything else I believe is the same so replacing trigger parts etc. will be ok. These are fairly new so companies will start to make stuff for them. You can also go to www.rugerforum.com and www.rimfirecentral.com and see what other people have done to theirs. I believe that rugerforum has a new section that only deals with the TD. Good luck

Is it better to buy a tricked out heavy barrel version off the bat or buy a basic version and change out stock/ barrel etc etc, OR get something on between and add as necessary. Opinions?

He is shipping to CA from SC, I just bought a NIB 10/22 standard model wood w blued finish from him. After my FFL receives it and tacks on his FEE + DROS and Sales Tax it will only be $295 OTD. Big 5 price on the same rifle is $279.99 + tax and FEES, with no sales in the forseable future until they get more frequent shipment from Ruger. according to someone I know at Big 5 Corporate.

Don't worry about the plastic trigger guard, it is actually an improvement over the metal one. Many custom 10/22 gunsmiths will only work with the plastic one now. It is much more precise than the cast metal. It took a while to grow on me as well, but after working a few myself I can see the benefit.

Ruger has a video about strength on their website and this makes an interesting read:

I bought a basic 10/22 for one of ojisan's tommygun kits. I've got a never-been-fired stock barrel and wood stock just sitting around.

If you're near me, I'd be more than happy to donate it to you. You could then buy an aftermarket receiver, trigger group, and whatever else you need to build up a rifle. It would be like starting with a semi-custom, then upgrade to full custom later.

Just checked the spare parts box and they're still there. Just something to think about. Let me know.

I was just down at Turners in Kerney Mesa and they had a basic 10/22 with the wood stock on the rack. I didnt ask the price. They also had a nice takedown model as well as a heavy tactical model.

I just put a basic model in jail @ Turners Pasadena. Planning to eventually build it into a target rile.

for kids i recommend getting the Synthetic/Stainless basic model version if you are planning on giving it to your son at a young age. reason being that the black barrels are painted and paint can chip then rust the barrel. both wood and plastic can get dings and gouges but synthetic wont splinter and is more weather resistant. learn with iron sights before scopes. i'm sure you already knew that.
