I would consider a lever action like the Henry H-001. I think that a youngster might enjoy the lever action more than a bolt action, and the Henry is a beautiful gun, which a young girl would like.

My 7 and 10 yr old liked the 10/22 but it was to big for them so they rested on a bag. They probably liked shooting my 25 rd. magazines with it more. Even they know more is better lol. I'll let them enjoy them while we still can. I do want to pick up 2 bolt guns 1 for me and 1 for them. Cause my thumbs were sore and between us ,500rd was nothing.
They want me to get this .I admit I want too.

My girlfriends daughter is 12. I got her a Cricket . It's a little on the small side but she never shot before and I wanted to teach her all the principals before handing her my 10/22. Pretty cool little gun. I like shooting it lol!

            They are Crickett 4x scopes.

My grandkids have had no problem handling these rifles. My 5 year old was able to load, cock, and shoot by himself after showing him three rounds.

As far as the safety lock, I secured a key (comes with two) to the handle of each rifle case so it never gets left behind. There's also one in my range bag.

The bipod is a Winchester from Walmart and goes non and off easy. It helps tem stabilize the front of the rifle when we are shooting on BLM/USFS land.

The rifles are very accurate and they have more fun when they are hitting what they aim at. I also bought each a 10/22 and the 9 year old is almost big enough for it. I was able to score three with consecutive serial numbers and put a pink stock on my granddaughter's rifle. She thinks she's the coolest person in the range with her pink rifle and pink camo rifle case.

Saving up for another set (Crickett and 19/22) in pink. Another granddaughter coming in October. My son and his wife both have 10/22 rifles already.

My youngest grandson wants the zombie green hogue stock for his 10/22.

I can't wait until they can teach their kids on these rifles. My sons both ave rifles my dad bought for them just before he passed away. They appreciate those rifles and understand the significance of them.

I LOVE taking the grandkids to the range.

Crickett also makes adult size stocks if she is getting too big for the standard youth stock. Makes for a nice lightweight little rifle.

Thanks everyone for all of the great reviews!!! I have decided that it's really between the rascal and the cricket that this point... I'm not too concerned with her out-growing it as i also have a 5 mo girl and i figure by the time my 5 y/o out-grows it, my younger daughter will be able to shoot it and i can step up my older daughter to something larger, be it another .22 in a SA configuration or a larger caliber.
The CZ, henry, and others are nice, but over my budget (which im trying really hard to stick to)...
Not hearing a whole lot of negatives about the rascal...
i see a few people talking about the lock on crickets but i actually like that idea... it will keep her from firing it if, for whatever reason, she's able to get it in her hands without supervision...
Really sounding like a coin toss at this point lol.
Again, thank you everyone for your input.

                Yo Ron Solo...
Not meaning to hijack the OP's thread, but just wanted to say Great job with the grandkids!

It is my understanding that the youth Marlin XT-22 can accept a full-size stock. It'll just have a shorter barrel (16" vs 22") than the standard full-size. I also just recently bought my youngest a synthetic stock Crickett for when she's older, and it doesn't have the lock, so I guess you'd have to get the wood stock?

I voted for Rascal already, but wanted to show my boy shooting his, yesterday. Note how easily he's handling and loading it.

The sights and accutrigger are excellent for promoting marksmanship. He was nailing the walking target we have, at 20m shooting offhand, and rarely missing. The fins on the walker are 1" x 1" on each side.

Well guys, I took your advice also, So thanks to the OP for this post. They had a rascal with accutrigger at Big5 in Hemet .Regular price but I told her I would also buy a gamo pellet rifle if they gave me the sale price and they did. This should slow my kids down from blowing tru a brick of 22 and learn the skill.
