Took my AR22 out to Angeles yesterday for the first time. I bought the upper from another Calgunner a couple of months ago but never had the chance to try it out. It has a Taccom plug and an enhanced firing pin IIRC. I ran it with Aguila SE standard velocity ammo for about four mags full then decide to switch over to Remington Golden Bullet from the bulk packs.
First two shots were fine, then the conversion stopped working. It appeared as if the recoil spring and guide rod had jammed into the bolt. I removed the conversion from my upper and the bolt would just slide around in the conversion frame. I couldn't find the guide rod or spring.
No obstructions in the barrel, so I popped in another bolt assembly from another AR22 I just finished building. Everything worked fine.
When I got home I disassembled the conversion, place the bolt into a vise and pulled on what appeared to be the end of the guide rod with a pair of vice-grip pliers. Out came the spring and guide rod.
I tried to duplicate this particular malfunction with the other CMMG unit I had. The guide rod was small enough to fit completely inside the spring/guide rod housing on the bolt. I hit the circular retainer on the guide rod with a few strokes of a file then polished down the rough edges with some sandpaper and finished it off with crocus cloth.
Everything appears good to go. Has anyone else ever experience this type of jam with a CMMG or any other .22 conversion? Just curious.
