    MP5 clones

    Hi guys,

So this is obviously not a new subject, however, these clones have been around for awhile now and I'm wondering how everyone's is holding up? Back when these first came out, I wanted one bad. I read a lot of reviews, mostly saying things like; fun and cool but QC issues, and a lot of plastic. The latter turned me off to the guns as I want something that will last. Later, I would read about frame/receiver cracking after a few thousand rounds. This pretty much did it for me, and I was no longer in the market for one.

It's been a couple few years now and I'm wondering again.....how's everyone's MP5 clone holding up? Is the HK version worth the extra bucks? I'm not usually worried about buying guns used, but I can certainly see some warrant into buying one like this new. What are your current thoughts on this style of firearm? I know there are other "versions" now (stg44, m4 etc.), but there is a big soft spot in me for an mp5. Thank you all for your opinions and advice.

I own a 1st gen German Sport Guns GSG-5 (got it one they first came out) and have about 5000 rounds through it. It still a good plinker and I have not experienced any parts breakages.

However, if I was to choose a "MP5" style .22LR rifle now, I would go with the H&K/Umarex/Walther.

The H&K/Umarex/Walther version is the better product (better materials, fit & finish, easier to disassemble).

    Also...
The Ruger 10/22 and Marlin Model 60 are both more accurate & reliable than the German Sport Guns GSG-5/GSG-522 and H&K/Umarex/Walther MP-5.22

I looked at the GSG and thought it felt like a plastic toy. Paid a little more and got a HK. It feels like a real gun and not a plastic toy. I haven't shot it yet (still in jail) but after first impressions I'm glad I went with the HK, Umarex, Walther rather than the GSG. I hope it shoots as good as it looks/feels.

PS, I am more than happy to buy guns used but found they were going for more on here used than online new. Also extra mags are kinda expensive at around $40 shipped.

I guess I look at it as just a kinda cool toy. If I didn't own one already I would sure consider a 10/22 a better value plinker at half the cost of one of these tacta cool 22s.

Thanks for the advice gents. If I see the HK version come up at a good price, I'll probably scoop it up. I've got a 10/22 and a couple .22 bolt guns....this is just to kill my fix of having something in the MP5 flavor.

I'm in the same boat. Always wanted a MP5. I finally put away the cash for one, about $2400. But then I got the thinking about it. $2500 bucks for a rifle in a pistol caliber. I don't know but that just seems like a lot. So I decided the money would be better spent on a little verity. I decided to buy a MP5 in .22, a Golani .223 and a FAL for roughly the same $2500 bucks. As of now I have the MP5 and the Golani and still have about $1200 set aside for the FAL. I guess this .22 is also my way of getting my MP5 fix W/O spending the cash.

Same boat as the others, I just couldnt see spending all that money on a 9mm clone and not get a SBR as well and have to deal with a fin grip or mag lock. I went with the Walther HK. When I move from this crazy socialist state, I will get 9mm version SBR.

I have an ATI GSG-5 and it's just way too fun. I go through .22 ammo too fast when I use it, doesn't help I have 6 mags lol, so a lot of times I don't bring it. When it comes to ammo it is one picky SOB, I can only use Federal bulk pack. I'm still debating, in my head, if I should sell or not.

I have both and the Uramex is far better 22lr.
