Colt M4 22 question

I was looking at a colt Ar type 22 at big 5 and was thinking of getting it for my daughter. my question is can i change the upper later to a larger caliber or is it just a 22? Looking at it I got the idea that the lower could be used for other upper platforms when she was ready.

No.
The Colt M4 22LR is only Colt by name and a M4 look alike.
They are made by Umarex and share little parts (if any, probably just stocks and grips) with a real AR15.

If that is you goal then get a real AR15 lower and put a rimfire upper on it or get a whole real AR15 and get a rimfire drop in bolt. You can then use any real AR part on it and then switch it back and forth between rimfire and centerfire with ease.

To me looking at the internals and how they are taken apart its no wonder that they started as a toy company and then were bought by a gun company.
That barrel is tiny under the outer sleeve, I can not believe you have to take the muzzle device off to field strip it...

Give me a 22lr upper or a drop in bolt over that any day.

The gun is made to take completely apart to service. I've got over 10,000 rounds through mine I like it.

I just picked one up as a trade for a Vaquero I wasn't using. Have a few hundred rounds through it. It's not a smoothrunner at the moment.

It was pretty dirty when I bought it (used) so I did a complete field strip to clean it and lube up. The spring adjustment was fully in so I lightened it up a bit to help with the cheap ammo I'm running. First time at the range still had a few stovepipes and FTEs. I'm hoping we'll figure this out real quick...I need to duplicate the issue in my own hands to be sure.

My girlfriend is doing most of the shooting so she can't explain to me just yet what has been going wrong but the mags often are not fully seated even though she is giving them a good slap. We've just marked the mags to start keeping track of which is problematic.

Accuracy - she loves it. Only have a 3x Nikon on top and she has less than a 3" group at 50 yds (she's never shot before).

Trigger is horrible at over 9 lbs. I just sent it in to Bill Springfield for a much-needed smoothing ($49).

It has potential, but the mags are proprietary and nothing about the parts on this are interchangeable with a real AR (except for anything using the rail). Even a replacement grip would need a second hole put into it to attach.

Oh, and the forward assist and bolt release are cosmetic only.

It's definitely not a 1:1 training unit. Get a conversion kit or dedicated upper to use with a real AR lower.

M&P 15-22 is probably the best dedicated .22LR platform for training purposes. With the similar button locations, interchangeable trigger kits from AR-15 to 15-22, and many other mods that fit on the AR can be added to the rifle.

It's been my experience that if you run " cheap ammo " through a Colt M4 your asking for a long day,,

Nowadays there's no such thing as cheap ammo! It's more a matter of "shoot it if ya got it". I'm glad I have anything to send downrange at this point.

But honestly, if a .22 can't shoot the cheap stuff it's not worth keeping. The M4 is currently on probation pending an improvement in attitude

They are touchy on ammo. Didn't like Remington HV , shot CCI's, Winchesters. Had a old pack of Wildcats shot them like a target gun.
