    Marlin 60 revolving speed loader

First time poster here with a question. I have a Marlin 60 that I am currently working on. When I got it, it looked like it fell off a truck on the freeway so I ended up going tactical with it. I purchased a speed loader for quick reloads at the range. Last week I removed the ATI stock in favor of making a new one. While looking at how I wanted to build the stock I came up with the idea of incorporating my speedloader into the build. Basically remove the magazine tube and replace it with a series of tubes, similar to a revolver, only 10 tubes that hold 15 rounds each. The rifle would still function the same, only when you emptied the first tube, you would pull the inner mag tube out and manually turn to the next tube and reinsert the inner tube. It would also be non-removable. I've got 20 years of machining under my belt and a shop full of cnc machines, so I am confident I can make the idea work. My question is would it be legal. I have read the laws and I know the tube fed .22 is exempt, but to what extent?

    Something like this?

    But mounted under the barrel.

Interpreting the law it basically says "A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device" "shall not be construed" to be a "large-capacity magazine" therefore it is legal to do any of the following "manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, or lends"

12020. (a) Any person in this state who does any of the following
is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year
      or in the state prison:
      [...]
      (2) Commencing January 1, 2000, manufactures or causes to be
manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or
exposes for sale, or who gives, or lends, any large-capacity
      magazine.
      [...]
      (c) (25) As used in this section, "large-capacity magazine" means any
ammunition feeding device with the capacity to accept more than 10
rounds, but shall not be construed to include any of the following:
      (A) A feeding device that has been permanently altered so that it
cannot accommodate more than 10 rounds.
      (B) A .22 caliber tube ammunition feeding device.
      (C) A tubular magazine that is contained in a lever-action
      firearm.
The multi tubes would be legal just like the KSG shotgun tubes are.

While its an interesting idea, and I don't mean to limit your creativity...
Its going to end up being pretty heavy.
Why not just reload with one of these:

Thanks for the quick responses. That is the speed loader I have. Weight is something I was conserned with. 150 rounds adds a pound so I may shorten it. My biggest concern was weather it would be legal. Thanks again.

As posted by chaos, each individual tube is good to go.

The prevailing school of though is that if you have to take actions (other than pull trigger/operate action) to select/rotate/switch to the next set of rounds then you have a collection of magazines, not a single ammunition feeding device.

The manual tube pull/cylinder rotate/tube re-insert process keeps your speed-loading device classified as a collection of tubes (which are individually exempt from capacity limit) instead of a single non-tube ammunition feeding device which would be subject to the 10rnd total capacity limit.

It sounds similar to the tri-mag thing, where you can bind 3 10 rounds magazines together. You have 30 rounds in a "unit" but you still have to do something manually every 10 rounds.

For your idea it sounds very interesting, make sure you show us the final product!

Not to change your subject but are you happy with the 60? I looked at one at turners today and liked it, just wandering if they're reliable and cycle ok.

              Thanks

I will definitely post pics. I really like the 60. Mine is a 30 year old model. I haven't had any problems in the 5 years I've had it.

                  See the Marlin 795 Megathreads

The 795 is just a 60 with a detachable box magazine.
Both the 60 and 795 are highly reliable. There are millions of more of these rifles out there then the Ruger 10/22.
