    mp15 22 or 10/22

not a pissing contest, just need thoughts.

I have a 10/22 and love it. my 11 y/o son does too. he wants his own. mine has tech sights and hogue overmolded stock. love both!!

his birthday is coming up soon and he wants to go halvsies with me on a 10/22 but he really likes the AR style. he's thinking 10/22 with the tapco intrafuse stock thing and tech sights. he's in love with that look. can't say as I blame him we've also looked at several AR style 22's (mossberg, ATI, colt, etc.) mossberg looks kinda cheap. ATI is decent. colt is $$$!!!

but I've seen a couple of lightly used mp15-22's locally for 425-450. $ for $, it'd end up being pretty close either way. how do they compare in terms of accuracy, function, etc. I don't own an AR style rifle so not needed to practice.

other than for customizing which obviously goes to the 10/22, which would you guys recommend? thanks

I own both and really prefer my 10/22s. I don't like really high mounted sights on a 22. The trigger on the M&P15-22 is pure GI (7lbs and gritty) and will cost $100-200 to replace. A VQ hammer kit is $35 for the 10/22 right now at MidwayUSA. A decent scope mount for an AR is $100-250 while decent rings for a 10/22 are $20.

          I have both.
The M&P is stock, except for the scope and upgraded trigger.
The 10/22 - Only the bolt and frame are OEM, everything else has been replaced.

AR .22lr rifles are distincly different.

A M&P 15/22 is like have a AR just in a smaller caliber.

10/22s dressed up as AR suck.

If you can find a AGP kit for the ruger..Then OK

            Otherwise..An AR in .22

i have both too. both bought for my son but the 10/22 turned into my gun.
the 10/22 is way more accurate with the right parts and is cheaper then the 15/22.
both of my guns are set up to shoot sub sonic ammo and have work done to them but in the end the 10/22 wins

now from the kids point of view the looks of the 15/22 is what matters most.

              both are great guns

The 10/22 can be much more of a shooter than the M&P 15-22. The benefits of the 15-22 though is that the button and features mirror that of a full sized AR15. The M&P 15-22 is a great tool to train your son to use an AR15 and when moving to the full size, everything will come naturally. Depends on the purpose of the rifle. It is accurate enough to easily take squirrels at 50 yards though.

                  I have both.

The dedicated AR22 gets used and the 10/22
                  collects dust.

A 10/22 with a Tapco stock is a good option for your son becuase the adjustable stock would alow him to get a length of pull that would fit him best compared to a standard 10/22 stock. I own a couple of 10/22 with one wearing a Tapco stock and the other with an ATI stock. These stocks are good options for your current 10/22.

A dedicated AR-15 type .22 lr rifle is good if you like variety or for training with your center fire AR-15. The M&P 15-22 is a good all polymer option becuase it is light weight and has the same controls as a standard AR-15. I don't own an M&P 15-22 but I've shot them along with the Colt (Umarex) AR-15 .22lr. Between the M&P, Colt and Mossberg I would go with the M&P becuase of the reliability and controls. However, for realistic weight and features I went with a dedicated .22lr upper from Tactical Solutions.

It's hard to compare the 10/22 with an AR-15 in .22lr becuase they are so different. It will be up to your son to decide what is best for him. There are a lot of aftermarket options out there for both platforms. The Tactical Solutions upper is a tack driver but the Kidd trigger on my 10/22 is hard to beat. The best advise I can offer is to have your son try them out at a range or at the gun store before he decides.

Here is my Tac Sol upper in Foliage Green along with my OD Green AR-15.

This is not mine but here is a 10/22 Take Down with a modified ATI stock.

If you're going for an AR style/feel then go 15-22...otherwise 10/22

The ruger 10/22 was the first .22 rifle I shot as a kid I liked it, but a while later I was at an indoor shooting range with my dad and he rented a mp15-22 he liked it enough to buy one. I used to take it to the range all the time untill the price of .22 went sky high. When ever I took new shooters to the range I would always have them shoot that, then have them step up to the big boy.

Personally, I would pick the 10/22 but if price is not the concern and its for the kid, get whatever he wants.

Well I ended up jailing the MP15. Got one from marketplace. Came with 4 mags and a red dot. Rails with A2 sights. $425. He's goin to love it.

I of course leaned towards 10/22 but kids like cool looking stuff. And of course us big kids too
