Recommended Ruger 10/22 Mods

Hello all,

Long time lurker of the forums, first time user.

I've just purchased a new Ruger 10/22 with the black synthetic stock and was wondering what are the common/recommended basic mods for it? I've done a little research on this gun and there are a ton of things you can do. But I was wanting to start out with some basic mods first. This gun is going to be just for target shooting/plinking mostly at the range, 25-100yds mostly.

I've got a basic 3-9x scope for it with some good rings. I will stick with the standard barrel, trigger, and stock for now. A few of the common mods I've seen are the synthetic recoil/bolt buffers, Auto bolt release and a different extractor.

From what I have read the recoil buffer replacement makes sense, but I wasn't sure what the auto bolt release or using a different type of extractor would help with.

I've owned a Marlin Model 60 for 20+ years and finally decided it was time to add a Ruger 10/22 to the collection (Next up is a Marlin 795, then a Remington 597).

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated!

You'll figure out what the auto bolt release helps with after about 20 minutes of trying to operate the stock bolt release.

I found the stock magazine release to be less than ideal, the aftermarket solved that problem.

You said no trigger changes but a DIY trigger-job-in-a-box ($50-110) is what they need most. After the trigger then a better magazine release ($10-35) would be next on my list.

I would recommend the Volquartsen hammer and auto bolt release (sold together) for about $45.

The auto bolt release makes your 10/22 life a lot easier.

i messed up a DIY bolt release. its jamming up my 10/22 and the bolt gets locked and takes forever to release it. time to buy an aftermarket one.

I took my Marlin 795, which has a horrible mag release to an Appleseed shoot with my friend, who brought his brand new 10/22 TD. I complained bout the mag release until I saw him suffering with the bold release. I couldn't believe how horrible it was!

I don't know if you need an AUTO bold release, but dang, you need something! he was using his fingernail to either pick at the bottom of it, or try and poke up at the top, then someone suggested using something like a credit card to press the top of it.

Wow, why would Ruger do this?

I'm going to do a bit of research on alternatives to this. But yeah, whatever the mod is for the bolt release, it's probably worth doing.

Thanks all for the tips. I will be getting the auto bolt release first then prob trigger and mag release next. I don't mind the stock mag release too much, but some time at the range will be the true test.

Now if I could just find some extra 10-round magazines somewhere! I'll keep checking Sportsmans Warehouse every week when I go in for my weekly ration of .22LR (if I'm lucky!)

The auto bolt release definitely makes life easier as well as the extended mag release. As for a trigger job although there is cheaper alternatives the Kidd "trigger job" kit is one to take into consideration. It is a little on the light side with a 1 3/4 lb pull.

A tri-mag once you find extra mags is also fun at the range!

If you "just purchased a new 10/22," it should have an extended mag release from the factory. With the old style, you had to push up on the release, located on the bottom of the rifle. With the new style, you can just flick your finger forward to drop the mag.

In my opinion, the new style is fine and doesn't need replacing. It is really a copy of the aftermarket ones. But if you don't like it, there are plenty of other ones out there.

Yeah, it is a brand new model with that extended new style mag release. I was wondering about that. I'm sure it will work fine for me.

I put the Kidd "trigger job" kit in my 10/22 and it was a night and day difference. They sell an extra spring kit that allows the trigger pull weight to be adjusted as well.

That's it. Get a trigger kit and a scope. The 10/22 is then a squirrel killer. You do not need anything else except practice to become a great shooter. Go for long shots and learn Kentucky Windage.
