    Recommend a reliable .22 handgun under $500

So my buddy is in the market for a .22 handgun and is asking for a recommendation. I don't have any 22's so thought I'd ask you fine folks.

My first thought is the m&p .22.
Any others? Is the m&p relatively reliable?

    Your comments/advice is appreciated.

I have about 500 trouble free rounds through my Browning Buckmark Contour. I have a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot that mounts right up to the rails. Absolute joy to shoot.

Yep! Great reliability. Not a finicky eater and more fun than we may have a right to.

What does he want the .22 for?

If it is to cheaply practice and he owns a Glock/SW/1911 he might want to look into the .22 cal versions of these.

TINY hands?....then look at the Ruger SR22

                Competition shooting?....Ruger competition model

                Plinking?.....Ruger Mk 1,2,3,22/45

I would avoid the Walther P22 with it's cast zinc slide that has been known to crack. They are not as accurate as the SR22 (from my own experience with shooting both) and the Ruger is cheaper to boot.

A lot of people have mentioned the Ruger, which is a great 22 semiauto. I would also recommend a Smith and Wesson Model 17, also known as K22. Probably the greatest 22 revolver ever made, and used ones in good condition can be found around that price.

My GSG 1911-22 will EAT ANY 22 CALIBER round I use. I love it! Makes my buddy jealous when his Mosquito can't feed WWB 22.

                    GSG 1911-22 FTW!

While yes the Smith and Wesson Model 17 / K22 is probably the finest double action 22 revolver...
Where did you get your value from? 1980? lol
Those go for over a grand now...
Guess by "good condition" you mean beat to hell

OP for under 500 the Ruger MK series is one of the best out there.
Buckmarks are fine pistols too but will be pushing the 500 mark.

IMO stay away from any of the "micronized" tacticool pistols out there.. ESPECIALLY the Sig Mosquito...

Ruger 22/45, S&W MP22 or GSG 1911. I have all three and have ran at least several hundred rounds thru all three of them with mix bulk 22 ammo and no issues whatsoever.

And the Ruger is made from?? same material I belive

The fun factor was high at the ZOMBIE shoot in Barstow.

                            I thought so too.
Till I did the fix..De-burr ramp and polish.
                            So I can recommend it.

+1 on the Ruger 22/45. You might also consider the Ruger SR22...I love mine.
