Yeah you're right there's freaking ammo everywhere! It's cluttering shelves in all the usually locations. Hell, just look at all the posts on all the gun forums ..never seen so much ammo. The damn stuff is like powder and primers "we all" trippin' over it. And of course with this over abundant supply out weighing the demand, the prices are fallin' right outta bed!
We never had it so good!
BTW I got a nice little fixer upper on some very lush moist ground in Florida if your interested.

I keep seeing cheap Aquila .22LR on sale, but from what I understand, it's so underpowered it's not likely to push a bullet all the way to the end of a barrel.

I didn't say the shelves were overflowing with it. I said it's available if you look for it.

The primer only is what's on sale cheap. The rest is $.20 - $.30 a round, which is WAY more than I'll pay.

If you're going by what's on gunbot.net right now, yeah. But there are deals that don't even make it to gunbot.net

LOL. I went to Cabela's just to see, and the .22LR has .50BMG instead.

That is kinda funny, but cabelas isn't the only retailer either. Also, just because they don't have any now doesn't mean they didn't earlier and won't later. Seems like a lot of people managed to get those federal bulk packs, and you still see reports of people finding bulk .22lr in stores on occasion.

The simple fact is, that there is reasonably priced bulk .22lr if you look for it.

The "simple fact" is there's an ammo supply shortage! Ammo has tripled since 2002, when it had been static for the 50 yrs previous. It's doubled again since 2012 in many cases.
Reasonable is a somewhat ambiguously subjective word. There's nothing reasonable about shooters having to pay today's usurious prices.
But by all means keep buyin' what you can find at these "bend over" prices so these prices can be established as the new norm.
BTW, new and especially young shooters are bailin' out of shooting because of this throttle job!
Most shooters don't want to have to approach shooting and ammo purchases as a treasure hunt.

buying ammo now would have been like buying gold when it was $1,600 an ounce. I have not purchased any ammo or components since about Oct 2012 and I don't plan to do any shopping until prices stabilize. It could be another 6 months but I have enough to hold out for longer than that. You are right, its the new shooters who don't remember all of the past shortages and what caused them that are not prepaired or didn't see it coming. For me it was luck, I stocked up before the elections like I did last time only 3X and then there was the school masacre and all this talk of banning everything that has people scared

And regarding the rimfire vs centerfire manufacturing deal mentioned back there a bit, I kind of thought that the machinery necessary to spin the primer into the rim (I thought that's the way they do it) would demand a line all it's own, they wouldn't have to share with anything else.

You may be right kaiser, I really have no specific knowledge about it. I just thought the article I linked explained it the best I've seen. What I do know for a fact is that the whole shortage thing has been caused by many many factors all working together into what we've seen. IMO the biggest factors, short term, it's the resellers, long term I really think the firearms industry is underestimating the demand. If you look at firearms sales alone, they've been steadily increasing every year for several years, not just during the panics. The ammo mfgs especially, I think, haven't ramped up prod enough. But your guess is good as mine.

.22 is very popular and not everybody makes. From what I have heard everything is being produced as fast as they can. All ammo makers are running full bore.
The other issue is the seasonal producers and .22 is probably not as big a money maker as the bigger calibers. Also small ammo producers do not make .22, they buy it from the ones who make it.
I bought a box of Winchester 555 for $31 with tax at a local gun store, around the 1st of march.
