I have a new 10 22 takedown and I bought a see through picatinny rail for mounting a scope on and be able to use the iron sights as well. But when I mount a scope on, the scope is sighted well above the impact point. I tried adjusting the elevation turret on the scope for compensating for the extra height because of the mount but it does not seem to be moving down any. Is this a problem with the scope or is the mount too high for it to adjust to ? This is my first time trying to sight a scope so I am not sure if the reticle movement should be obvious when I look through it or the movement is something that is hard to see. Any advise would be great. Thanks.

Scope adjustment help

A see through picatinny rail, plus the rings? You're probably right that the scope is sitting way too high. Although you said that you're trying to adjust the elevation but it isn't moving, did you bottom it out already? Does it still adjust in the other direction?
edit: Can you post a picture so we can get a better idea of what you're talking about?Last edited by Merc1138; 04-09-2013, 12:01 PM. -
The U-up arrow and the D-down arrow, usually indicate the direction that the bullet will move (if the adjustment is moved in that direction).
The scope is not adjusted for "compensating for the extra height because of the mount", just concentrate on where the bullet strikes the target.
Yes, there might be a problem with either the scope or the mount. But I don't think you've given enough info to make that determination yet.

It helps if you give precise info. Distance-to-target and bullet impact in relation to aiming-point are common. (Size and shape of the group are also common, though probably not relevant to this conversation.)
Make, model, power of the scope, and make model, style of the rings are also common.
Some of the info you give may be irrelevant, but all we know is what you tell us.

See-thru rings, especially on rifles equipped with iron sights, are usually more difficult to sight-in. Instead of the cheek being placed on the stock, the chin is used. This makes it harder to place your eye in exactly the same place each time.Comment

What are you using to sight it in? Laser bore sight? Or are you actually shooting at a close target? I have personally used see-thru rings on a 10/22 before and that raises the scope high as well. That shouldn't be a problem I would think. That said, these days we have much better choices IMO. For instance: weaver rail and quick disconnects. If the scope goes bad, take it off and use the irons. Since your rifle is the TD version, I would look at appropriate optics that still allow for you to keep that rifle in its original bag & pouch. For me, I have a laser bore sight and I simply adjust the turrets accordingly to get the laser dot center with the reticle and then test with live ammo at 25 yards. Never had a problem sighting one in in say 5 rounds after that.Comment

I am trying to sight it at a 25 yard range using the iron sights that I can see through the see through rail. Comparing what the iron sights are targeting and what the scope is targeting, there is at least a 1 foot difference where the scope is 1 foot above the iron sights target. So I was trying to move the reticle so it is targeting the same spot as the iron sights. I did a live fire with the iron sights and they were quite spot on.
The scope is a BSA Tactical Weapon 4 x 30mm Rifle Scope with Mil-Dot Reticle, Rings and AR/SKS Mount came with it. Size is great that it fits the TD bag nicely and the 4 inch eye relief is also nice. But the turret was not adjusting the reticle at all either up or down. I even tried the windage and it does not do anything to the reticle. So does this mean the scope is bad and I need to have it replaced ? Thanks for your inputs so far.Comment

Ignoring the fact that it's a BSA, if the windage and elevation aren't doing anything, it's busted. The scope is a BSA Tactical Weapon 4 x 30mm Rifle Scope with Mil-Dot Reticle, Rings and AR/SKS Mount came with it.
