How can there be a shortage?

I just ran 16,000,000 rounds thru my reloader as seen here. Why would dhs or doj or anyone buy up rimfire?

    Must watch video

That's 4 million a day, where'd you get 16 million from? Divide 4 million by a reasonable(possibly low) 200 rounds per range trip, now you've only got enough to supply 20,000 shooters nationwide per day. 500 round bulk purchases? You've got enough to supply 8,000 people.

Who shoots that much? Americans. Obviously it was enough to keep up(with all of the other manufacturers included of course) before the panic buying, but if you get people only buying double what they normally did, then there's no way they could keep up.

They sell .22 in boxes of 500, or by the case at 10 boxes, that's 5000 rounds for like $160-$200 (pre panic).

They make a lot of .22, but it's also the most popular handgun and long gun ammo I believe. So yeah, there is lots, but it's also being shot a lot.

Plus they don't go full bore 24/7. Machines break, you need maintenance, you need to switch up the product, etc.

They tuned their production to what was a normal supply. After decades, they know how many pallets they need to ship out and to where and have adjusted their work shifts and maintenance schedule to meet that demand.

Plus you've got the people who shoot more .22lr than they used to, if they bothered to ever, since they don't want to pay .50-$1 a round for 5.56, .45, etc.

I took a class from AllSafe Defense Systems and this is from one of their newsletters:

Take for example .22LR ammunition. The industry as a whole (all manufacturers combined) is setup to produce 4,200,000,000 (4.2 Billions) .22 LR annually.

That is running all the machines, full capacity all the time, all manufacturers together. There is NOTHING they can do to produce more. That corresponds to 230,137 cartridge per State per day, which is 460 bricks of 500 .22lr per day per State. That means that if less than 50 people per day in each State are buying 10 bricks of .22, it is enough to dry up the entire supply as it is being manufactured.

Even if those numbers aren't correct, the ammo manufacturers certainly aren't going to dump millions of dollars into equipment just to increase capacity for .22lr for what very well could be a short term spike(albeit a large one) in demand, and then end up with equipment sitting idle once demand drops. Plus, even if they did make such purchases, it could take months to even get that equipment let alone get it running at full capacity with trained stuff, plus the increase in materials from suppliers to actually increase production.
