    Aguilla SSS ammo

I was given about 200 rnds of Aguilla SSS 60grn ammo.

I have no experience with the stuff and am wondering if I should sell it or use it.

Would it work in a 10/22 or my old colt woodsman?

Aguilla ammunition is first rate; I use it on a regular basis and have never had an issue. The 60 gr SSS was designed to be sub-sonic and used with a suppressor. It may not reliability cycle in either of your guns. Certainly no harm in testing it and seeing if it will work.

It worked well in my 10/22. Functioned well and fairly accurate. I don't recall if I had any problem in my pistols. It has a funny smelling blue smoke. I think the heavy bullet needs a faster twist for optimum accuracy.

I'd heard it was designed for the Israeli snipers (Sub Sonic Sniper) who were using silenced 10/22 for their operations.

The 60 grain Aguilla works great. It sparks and is dirty.
To get optimal accuracy past 25 yrds, you will need a 1/9 twist rate .22 LR barrel, (Too much spin drift)

It works great when fired out of a silencer...

I have fired roughly 600 rounds, you get too much spin drift on a 1/16 twist barrel.

I will gladly buy the ammo if you don't want it, I love shooting that stuff.
It cycles through the bolt of my S&W M&P 15-22

War, it has a smell, it tastes different, it takes a different kind of man, who runs towards gunfire and not away from it.

Watch this and thank a veteran next time you see him.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a shot this weekend and if I don't like it I'll sell it.

                Wait, what?

A 1:9 is a faster twist than a 1:16. That and the round at 950 fps is so slow I didn't think spin drift would be a problem, so I ran it through the JBM Ballistic solver. At 300 yards, way farther than most of us are going to shoot our 22's, there was only .1 inch difference in impact between a 1:9 twist barrel and a 1:16 barrel.

In fact based on JBM the bullet doesn't get adequate stability out of either barrel, though I don't seem to have a problem with them keyholeing out of my 1:16 Savage.

As far as accuracy, in my testing they are pretty good, but not great. About the same as Minimags and only a little better than Blazer. Not as good as Wolf or CCI standard velocity or CCI green label. They are extremely slow and will obviously drop off much more than a faster ammo, I could get some real world numbers but I don't have my dope cards right in front of me at the moment. They are however quite consistent and have very few flyers like cheaper ammo does. I did have quite a few fail to ignite in a rifle that rarely has problems with other ammo.

They are really quiet, even without a suppressor, but have much more energy than something like a CCI quiet. (SSS is also more accurate than CCI quiet in my testing) Which is probably the best reason to use this ammo.

Of course every rifle is different.

Most .22lr barrels are 1:16 and barely stabalize such a long bullet. Some will, some won't. My savage tumbles them at 25 yards giving a 6" group. Others say it works fine for them. Just gota test it in your guns.

If you have a .22 conversion insert for an AR, this ammo shines. Despite the chamber jump, the twist is much better for the heavy bullet.

It key holed on my 22/45 but shot just fine with my 1022. It did smell like cat pee.

Jury is still out for me. I picked up a few boxes a week or so ago and haven't had much time to test them either.
