Ruger 10/22 Breakdown with Scope in Bag

I was replying to another thread about scopes that fit on the Ruger 10/22 breakdown AND fit inside the bag that Ruger supplies.

I'll show you what I found that fits and how I made it work.

I'll also suggest an alternative to the ruger scope rail that provides TRUE see through with the scope removed.

Here are a series of pics hope they are clear. I selected the Leupold VXII Ultra Light 2-7X scope. This the perfect fit for my use. The scope weighs just 8.5 OZ. and is quite short. This is the older version and I picked it up on sale for $189. It appears to no longer be available BUT the Leupold VX1 2-7X may be a good alternative. There is also a new Leupold VX2 Ultralight 2-7X, but the price is quite high for a 10/22.

Notice the scope rail. This is not the Ruger rail. This one is offered by Mounts Plus for $29. You might say, "I can buy a see through rail for $10 from other vendors!" However, this is the only 10/22 rail I've found that actually give you use of the iron sights. The other rails are not low enough to allow you to use the iron sights as if the rail were not installed (of course the scope must be dismounted to use).

Here is a side view of the rifle. Yeah, it is a little dirty.

I used the Leupold QD rings. They are heavy, and made of steel. I would have preffered lighter QD rings, but the budget for this rifle was already being busted so the Leupold rings were chosen.

OK, the big question. Does it fit in the bag? Yup, it is a bit tight, but does not obstruct the zipper or bulge the top of the bag.

sigpicC'mon man, shouldn't we ban Democracks from Cal-Guns? Or at least send them to re-education camps.

So....here is how it closes. The thing about this bag is that it is really not padded inside, so if you drop the bag the two halves of the rifle will bang each other pretty hard. So there is a chance for scope damage even if the scope doesn't extend past the break.

Velcro won't reach so extend it.

Here it is sitting up. OOOPS sideways.

Note: That the bag is stuffed with .22 ammo, magazines and other stuff, so it is full. But it works just fine.

BTW - If you noticed that the RUGER LOGO on the BAG is not bright red. I DID IT WITH A BLACK SHARPIE.

    Hope this helps.

I had a weaver banner on my td but just like your set up the scope pushed the top of the bag. For me this was not acceptable because if dropped the scope could hit first. Bought a cheap BSA scope and packs up nicely.

Thats good, which model? BTW - I don't claim this is the best solution, it is just one solution. Another solution is to take the scope off with the QD mounts and put it inside the bag. This does create other problems however.

I wish Ruger had just made the bag a little bigger.

I posted a thread earlier today trying to figure out if there is a quick release for a Micro dot sight. It looks like you have an upgraded rail on your TD. Can you recommmend how I best match a sight with a rail? Should I just get on the phone and call the manufacturer / distributor? Thanks...

I'm not an expert, but I would use the rail I posted a link to above because it allows you to use the iron sights if the red-dot fails. Otherwise, having a QD mount will not help you if you want to fall back to the irons.

              Here it is.

As far as fit, just make sure the sight is made to mount to a picanny rail, they are standard size.

If you are buying a sight without a rail mount, make sure you find a picany rail mount that mates to your micro dot. There is some interchangeability, if you find your micro-dot on the web, just try doing a search for mounts for it.

If you don't have a sight I'd put the Bushnell TR25 on it. It has a picanny/weaver mount built in, but it is not a QD mount. However, it does attach with a small hex wrench (only one bolt) which is small. So, I'd just find a way to attach the hex wrench to the rifle. I'd be tempted to find a way to put it in the stock.

If you are creative, you might be able to find a thumb screw with the right threads and length to use instead of the hex bolt.

I'm not endorsing vendors, but here is the Bushnell....https://www.primaryarms.com/Bushnell...p/bs731303.htm

I have a TR25 that I've not mounted, and I've heard good things about them. From looking through mine the thing I noticed is that the dot is not perfectly round. This bothers some folks (not me so much), but for the price this is a very nice red-dot.

QD mounts are expensive. You could search for a mount with a thumb screw which is just about as good, but it needs to sit low on the rail for a 10/22.

Lastly, there is the Burris Fast-Fire III, and there is a low rail mount for it. The FF III is much better than the Fast-Fire II. With the FF II you have to remove the red-dot to put in a new battery. Which means you have to re-zero. You might be able to use the FF mount for a generic micro-dot.

I hope this answers your question to some degree.

10/22 Takedown w/Nikon Prostaff Scope. which rings & "see through" mount to get?

                  I have a 10/22 takedown. I'm looking into the Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 rimfire w/BDC on sale for $120 (3-9X40M BDC150)

What rings will work for the takedown without binding when the rifle is taken down? High, Medium, ?

Which see through mounts ACTUALLY allow you to see under them? I'd like to have my iron sights visible.

Apologizes in advance if the info is out there but I am a slow reader and I haven't found the answers I'm looking for. I'd like to order the scope, mount, rings from the same distributor to save on shipping. The Leupold mount that was discussed on here seems to be too much money where I will be buying the scope so I'd like other mount options.

On a side note, if my vortex strikefire ever comes in what rings should I get for this? I will have the Included extra-high 30mm ring. This puts scope's bore center 37 mm (1.46 inches) above the base height. So I would assume these rings wouldn't work well with the 10/22. If they do awesome. If not which rings?

I have this mount so I can use the iron sights if I wanted to.

The Mueller scope is on the way. Because it's big, I have to break down if I wanted to use the bag. So, I use this mount

I got tech sights for the 10/22. Then I cut down the factory rail and only used the front half of it. The tech sight uses the rear holes. I put a Bushnell trs25 on it and its set up for Cowitness. Poor man's cowitness setup. As a side benefit, when you look at the dot through the peep sight, it sharpens up the red dot.

The scope I am using is too long for the bag, so the bag now carries my takedown 12 gauge. But, I milled a channel down the center of the ruger rail so now I can see the iron sights as well. It really wasn't too hard to do, although it doesn't look reall pretty. But it sits under the scope so you can't really see it anyway.

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.
