    Trigger issues on my Taurus 941

    Hi all,
    So, I'm pretty new to the world of rimfire and to Taurus. I've shot several handguns over the years (usually my husband or dad's) but, this was my first purchase, on my own, with my likes and desires in mind. I bought a Taurus 941, small 22 mag revolver in hopes to use it at my CCW. I shot it the day we got it and it was ok, but was really impossible for me to shoot in DA. After getting home, cleaning it up and taking it out again, it was easier for me to shoot, but the trigger has some serious pull issues. It's unreal how tough it is. My Dad had his couple of older wheel guns with us and these bad boys were part of his first purchases back in the early 70's. They need work, but still fire 1000 times better. Any suggestions short of sending the gun to Taurus for a look? As is, it's pretty useless to me. I'm totally bummed out

    Rim fires are known to have stiffer DA trigger pulls than their center fire counterparts. A possible exception might be the Ruger LCRs that now come in .22 LR & .22 Mag.

      Seems you have the same issue as other 941 owners. Here's a short thread discussing the issue. Seems the trigger pull needs to be heavy for reliable ignition. One person measured the DA trigger pull at 16 lbs.

      I am doing a trigger job on a Tarus 941 in .22 mag. The original double action pull was over 16 pounds and the single action pull over 6.5 pounds. I called Tarus and they said that the heavy pull was necessary for reliable function. I did some internal polishing and cut 2.5 coils off both...

      Seems that cutting some coils off of the springs helps but that can be risky at best.

        this is what I hear.....it's too bad the .22 mag from ruger isn't CA approved yet. I've been waiting and drooling as that's what I really want. Sigh.

          thank you for the link. My dad has offered to polish it up and work on the springs. Totally bummed out. But, my husband likes it and of course, picked it up first thing and shot like a pro and noticed no issues with it. He's also amlost 100 pounds stronger than I!

          I will keep my eyes open and the very first LCR I can buy, I will in .22 mag. I want to use this as my carry weapon (or back up) Still searching for a subcompact in .40 S&W that I like.
          Thanks!

            I'm trying to figure out if it's you or the gun that's having issues.

            ~ Is the trigger pull normal, but you don't like the weight-of-pull?
            ~ Is the pull abnormally hard?
            ~ Does the revolver cock easily, or is it difficult?
            ~ When the cylinder is open, does it spin easily?

            ~~~
            The gun must work when it leaves the factory. The small frame guns have less room internally, so springs tend to be a bit stouter than their larger framed counterparts. In addition, small frames have smaller hammers which means less mass, again using stouter springs to ensure reliable ignition.
            Lighter springs may cure the weight-of-pull issue, but reliability may suffer. As this is a defensive gun, reliability must be placed ahead of weight-of-pull.
            ~~~

            ~ Clean under the extractor.
            ~ See if the cylinder is dragging on the barrel.
            ~ Look for debris, crud, or gunk inside the frame.
            ~ Make sure the tip of your trigger finger is not "bottoming out" on the frame before the gun fires.

              hi there...
              I can shoot it in DA, but it's so hard that my trigger finger has a small blood blister from the couple hundred rounds I put through it yesterday. It's HARD. Harder than any trigger I've ever pulled, EVER. In single action it's great. The hammer is a little tough to pull back, but I can easily do it. I do know that if I ever had to shoot right handed in DA, I'd be screwed. I can't even get it to fire with my weak right finger. The cylinder dosen't really spin all the easily and it wiggles when closed. My dad's exact words were, "You bought a peice of Sh**! Hope you learned your lesson." Maybe it needs to be sent back?

                I'd say the weight couldn't be normal. But what do I know? It's my first rimfire. and my first Taurus.

                  Something is amiss with your revolver. The cylinder should spin easily when in the loading position and should lock up tight at when the hammer is pulled back. The cylinder "wiggle" would really bother me as locking up tight is crucial to cylinder/barrel alignment. I own a Heritage Rough Rider .22lr/.22mag and while its an el cheapo revolver, the cylinder locks up tight with zero movement. I think you need to send it back to Taurus. I know that's not what you want to hear but at this point it sounds like the pistol is unusable for your purposes.

                    Have you cleaned under the extractor? Crud and unburned powder can build up which makes the length of the cylinder assembly longer, this can cause binding and make the cylinder harder to rotate, which leads to a hard trigger pull.

                    Look at the rear of the barrel and the front of the cylinder, are there spots that look like the two are contacting each other?

                    When the cylinder is opened, it should spin fairly easy with finger pressure. If it stops suddenly, there may be fouling inside. A little wiggle is normal.

                    Another test - Open the action, hold the thumbpiece to the rear, now try the DA pull. Does this feel a little easier, or a lot easier?

                    If you send the revolver back to the factory they will fix any problems, but if it's you then there may be nothing to fix.

                      I will check a few of those things out.... I did clean it very well and know there wasn't any crud anywhere prior to it being shot. It's brand new and only had about 150 rounds through it. thanks
