I stumbled onto this note while checking advanced weapons..
"911 = false flag. WTC 7 was brought down by demolition. 47 floors came down in 6 1/2 seconds - not hit by a plane. Just one of hundreds of absurdities that occurred that day. Wake up". -

Your Dad's rifle was probably drilled and tapped for a receiver mounted peep sight by Lyman, Marbles or Williams. Check alongside the receiver to see if it was D&T for a side mount for a scope like many older Savage and Mossberg rifles.

Thanks much Ed! This turned out to be Grandpa's, so finding answers is just a bit tougher, and it makes the rifle even cooler!
I'll post a pic in a while, looks like the ser# has been hammered over and replaced - not sure what that means.. I am going through the same thing with my JC Higgins (marlin m0d 80)
Yes your receiver is drilled for peep sights. Turns out that they sold them with ramp rear sights also and that is why you do not see the relief for the peep sight on the stock. If you want peeps you'll need to do that work your self or have a gunsmith do it. I think it's just wood so I'm going to do it myself once I get my sights and have everything in front of me. Nice and slow checking over and over as I go should do the trick.

It's a beautiful rifle. I am not a MUST BE STOCK kind of guy. I would have no trouble having it drilled for a scope mount myself. Lots of scope mounts running around out there. I have an extra mount rail for a Ruger 10/22 and see them all the time for around 10 bucks (for the ruger mount) I used a 40 dollar DIP mount on my CZ American that fit the dove tail. Long story short, nothing holding you back but fear and common sense.
