Torn between M&P22 & S&W 22A

Hello all,

This is my first post. Tons of great info here.

I have a question for .22 fans. I am going to purchase a .22LR Pistol this week. I have held both the M&P and the SW22A. I like the way both guns feel in my hand and like the look of both. I am really torn between them. There is not a rental range near me, so shooting them before purchase is not really an option.....

Does anyone have experience with these 2 Pistols good or bad?

Any help would be appreciated. Looking to make the purchase this weekend...

I Have the 22a and it is an excellent gun for the price. Some people have reported frame issues with them over a period of time but S&W has a lifetime warranty on these puppies so you can't go wrong with either selection.

First of all, welcome. Congrats on your first post. Now on to the topic at hand..I'm almost positive the 22a will be much more reliable as far as not jamming, misfiring, or FTE. I won't go into what I think about its looks as to not insult you. The M&P is reliable enough but takes a looong time to break in. I'm only offering my opinion on reliability. Not looks, usefulness, or cool factor...Good luck. PS if you get the 22a send me a PM, I have a brand new mag for it.

I own both guns. Both are very reliable. I've had NO problems with either one. My M&P 22 required no break in at all, just a thorough cleaning prior to shooting for the first time. Both are very reliable and not picky at all with ammo. They are great guns to shoot.

The 22A is more of a range gun/target gun. The M&P is more of a plinker/training gun (same size as centerfire M&P pistols). The magazines for both guns hold 10 rounds in the CA versions, although there are available factory mags for both that hold 12 for states where that's legal.

You can't go wrong with either one!

Another issue is that if you ever plan to put optics on your pistol the S&W22 has an integrated Weaver rail. Looks like the MP22 has a Pictanny or Weaver rail under the barrel so it could use a laser sight or light but no red dot or scope.

My m&p 22 has been 99% reliable. Can't speak to the 22a.
