My first low cost "precision" rimfire build

My goals are a 1MOA (or better) gun, that looks cool, is fun to shoot and cost less than $500 total.

I use the term precision loosely as i'm sure there are many more accurate rifles out there but this is for me to learn the basics and practice long range shooting in a .22LR platform.

I'm also going to be very guilty of choosing function AND form equaliy so yeah i'm a sucker for tacticool looks. Sorry if that offends or bothers the folks that will hammer me for not just buying a stock marlin bolt gun and spending the rest on ammo.

So far i have nothing but have purchased everything i'll need. Just waiting on shipping

    Build list:
    Savage Mark II FV-SR $250
Wells G96 airsoft gun $150 (only need the stock, all else will be resold)
Centerpoint adventure class 4-16x40mm $39 (refurbished)
    Leapers 8-12.5" bipod $28

The airsoft stock idea is from snipershide. A lot of those guys are using that particular airsoft AICS stock to bed their .22 practice rifles. I've always wanted a Remington 700 .308 in a AI stock but that's too pricey for me right now and i thought this is a good start. I figure i'll just keep the stock and throw the rest of the gun back on ebay for sale as parts for someone elses broken G96 airsoft rifle. Might make $50 back or something. it'll need to be bedded which will be my first bedding job.

The scope is cheap yeah, but again I did some research and for a budget $100 scope these are supposed to be pretty darn decent comparable to $200 scopes anyway. And refurbished it was less than half price so as long as it holds zero and the turrets repeat i think it will do just find for the use. if not then i'm only out $40 and i can save up for a better one.

Cheap basic bipod, nothing new or interesting about that.

So all in all this will be around $500 when it's all said and done and based on online reviews should be quite a decent .22lr in form and function. Shouldn't be to hard to do, weekend project. But i figured i'd post it up as a build thread incase anyone else is interested.

Here's some pics of basically the same thing (FV-SR on the same airsoft stock) with a very expensive scope. And one pic of it side by side with a real AI AICS 300 mag.

honestly i have no idea, i have neither the stock nor the rifle in my hands yet. I suppose once it's built If it doesn't i can just pin the stock in the extended position and that should take care of that. Oh and it looks like Fed law measures with stock extended and CA law measures with stock closed. so i'd probably be good either way.

If you are going for "precision" a plastic stock will cause accuracy problems unless it is of high quality. Wood is much better, more stable and easier to bed. Something like this will be far superior: http://www.boydsgunstocks.com/subgrouping.htm?cat=1215

yeah i did think about using a boyds tacticool stock, but these particular airsoft stocks have an internal aluminum frame and blocks that serve as pillars that supposed to be actually pretty good for bedding. From what i've read a lot of the cheaper and spring airsoft stocks don't have that (all plastic). Plus i'm a sucker for the AICS look. I do plan on doing some tests in the future (after the snow melts) to see what kind of grouping it gets compared to the stock...uh stock. Also i may have a TRR-SR coming as well that i can compare between the two.

good luck man. i dropped my Savage MKII into 2 different airsoft stocks so far (AICS and Blaser Tactical 2)

im currently working on my 3rd airsoft stock using a full metal Barrett M99 with the MKII.

thanks, i'm excited. did you notice a increase or decrease in accuracy over a stock stock? I've only read one thread where the OP says his accuracy increased a tiny bit but no one else seems to mention it going up or down.

Also what do you do with your old stocks? If i end up getting that TRR-SR i wouldn't mind trying it on a blaser stock. I ended up paying $150 for a complete NIB Wells G96 as there was nothing in the boneyards but i hope selling off all the pieces i don't need will bring that down to the standard $50-100 that it should have cost.

Any wise words for a newbie airsoft converter?

                i paid $99 for a used G96

i havent test fired the AICS conversion yet. only the Blaser Tactical 2. at the moment im not shooting for groups. so i cant tell you about increase/decrease in accuracy. i still dont even fully understand MOA yet.
i just plink steel targets at the shooting gallery.

im keeping all of my old stocks. i just need to buy more .22LR MKII's to fill each stock.

dont be afraid to make mistakes. if you over cut, you can always fill it up with JB Weld. also look up Devcon epoxy steel putty or something similar. this will help you bed, created brackets, shims, buffers, etc.

after youve done your first conversion, you start thinking about doing a 2nd or a few more after that. im already at over 30 different stocks that ive worked on.

Quick and dirty is 1MOA is basically a 1" group at 100yards (.5" at 50 yards). IMO, on a .22LR 1 MOA or better at 100 yards is great. I think too many factors come into play with .22LR over 50 yards to make an accurate test of a rifle's inherent accuracy and it starts being more about the shooter. 1MOA is the minimum I'm after. I have heard of many MKII bull barrels doing much better and hope this one is no different.

Well I might be hitting you up for info once everything comes in. I've heard i can use those blocks that come in the chassis to bolt the action to which should make the install super easy, but then one guy on Snipershide said he had to install a second aluminum channel and braze it in then bed to that. I wish someone had taken pics thoughout the process but i haven't ran across anything like that yet so this thread might be the first as i do plan on documenting it well if i can.
