    Walther P22 Needs Converting

Has anyone recently sent a Walther P22 to Smith and Wesson to be converted to the CA legal version? I contacted S&W first by email and the response I received was "we don't do that." I was surprised by this so I decided to call. The person who answered said, "yeah, just send it in with a note to the address on our website and we'll do it." I asked about the cost and he said, "I don't think we charge anything for that." I asked is there a certain department or person I should address it to and he said "nope, just the address on the website."

I'm not really stoked about "just sending it in with a note." Has anyone else done this recently? I haven't been able to shoot it becuase it's disassembled and there is not much worse than having a gun you can't shoot.

Any help or guidance would be appreciated. Even a "I sent mine in with a note and it came back fine" would help me feel better.

Yup, just keep track of your serial so they can refer you to the smith working on it if you want to get a status later on. I just sent mine in with a note.

Alrighty then. Thanks. I feel better about sending it in now. Now I have to research about sending a gun through FedEx or UPS as I have never had to do it before. I'm sure it's covered somewhere on the boards. Thanks again.

I should mention, you have to fill out a form on their website and they issue you an RMA via e ail. The RMA email includes info on how to send it. Stick your note in the box with it, then.

Send it in with the RMA and wait for the Fedex truck to show up in a couple of weeks.

Sorry to hear the conversion went south on you. I do hope I don't have the same issues and regrets. Just got the shipping notice from Fedex today and it's headed back my way now. Should be here in a few days.

Thanks to everyone who helped get me pointed in the right direction.

Yes- DOJ sent out letters when they discovered this gun had a threaded barrel/capable to install a suppressor, had/was being sold.

I had mine converted years ago. I guess DOJ is contacting those people with serial numbers that S&W/Walther has not reworked.

I sent mine in when i got the letters; S&W did the mod and sent it back with the "CA" stamp on it. A couple months ago I was gonna give it to my son-in-law and we went to the lgs to transfer it and DROS kept kicking the serial# and said it was an assault weapon. I cancelled the transfer and need to call CADOJ but they've been so backed up lately I haven't done so yet. Apparently CADOJ flagged the serial # of these early pistols and never updated their records. Anyone else experience this problem?
