Picked up my Ruger 10/22, Needs Optic!

Hey guys, I wanted to thank you all again for helping me locate my Ruger 10/22 all weather model rifle (Big 5) a few weeks back, I picked it up and I really like it! I was also fortunate to pick up 5000 rounds of 22 LR for the 3 minutes it was available so I'm all set for the range this weekend.

I only need an optic now. I was hoping someone could suggest a cheap yet functional optic readily availabe at perhaps Big 5, the range we frequent is outdoors with up to a range of 300 yards.

Any advice would as always be greatly appreciated!

The BSA 3x9x30 illuminated scope at Big5 is decent. I think it's about $75 bucks and you just pick it up and go shoot with it.

In my opinion no BSA or NcStar is decent. My advice is to live with iron sights until you can get a good scope shipped out to you. A Weaver RV4 4x28 rimfire can be had at Natchez for $120, a Weaver RV7 2-7x28 rimfire also at Natchez for $140, or a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40 rimfire w/BDC for $150 at Amazon. Buy quality and once cry over the price once. Buy junk and cry when it fails and again you have to buy a replacement.

At 300 yards you'll be lobbing them in with 12-13 feet of drop. Most 22LR shooting is done at 50-75yds.

I find Big 5 prices a little high. For low cost, local pickup, Walmart has a decent selection and better pricing. Who knew? As stated above, save up and buy better glass, it will not disappoint. I have a Nikon 3-9x40 rimfire and love it. Also have a closet full of cheap scopes that did not hold up.

On another rimfire forum they talk about 3x9 Simmons is the way to go. I went cheap Bushnell TRS-25 red dot and looking to buy a magnifier from Primary Arms. They can set you up. I guy from Primary Arms, Dimitri, is on CGN.

All experienced shooters that bought cheap China optics in the past will always say avoid China junk and buy quality once and dont look back. I am one of them. I have spent a good amount of money on the cheap China stuff in past and found myself either returning them or taking a loss and selling them here in the marketplace. Save yourself some money now by buying quality glass.

The folks over at rimfirecentral.com recommend the Mueller APV. I picked one up for my 10/22 and I have nothing but good things to say about it.

What height rings do you recommend for the Nikon scope? High or mid?

                    Are Nikons considered Chinese junk?

                      No they are Not.
Nikons are Excellent, I have run several and still run a couple.
Never one single issue, clear glass and precise/repeatable adjustments.

Also Mueller APV is very good, having owned one and another is on
                      its way to me.
For a less expensive scope thats works great, Simmons 22 Mag 3-9x32 is
                      Under $50
                      Failure is not an Option

I run the Mueller APV on my Savage MkII. Solid choice.
