What .17HMR do you recommend?

I picked up a Marlin 917V, horrendous trigger pull, but easily cured just changing the trigger spring. I got it down to about 3.5lbs from close to 8? changing the spring. That resulted in dime sized groups at 50yrds. I'll work it with the stones and get it lighter. Didn't care for the factory stock, so it sits in a Boyds thumb hole laminate now, much more comfortable to shoot.
The accuracy surprised me, but they do foul the bore after about 100rnds, and the groups start to spread.

I only have experience with my friends Savage 93r17 and my CZ 453, so I have no valuable input on any other brands besides hearsay.

The Savage is a great rifle for the money, neither my friend or myself have any problems hitting our targets with it, and the accu-trigger is very nice.

The CZ 453 is more expensive, but I would buy it again in a heartbeat. The fit, finish, and quality is exactly what you hear about in the reviews- they're beautiful. The accuracy is also every bit as good as the fanboys say, dead nuts every time.

The best thing about the 453 is the fully adjustable set trigger. It's very easy to adjust, and there's instructions in the manual. I currently have mine adjusted so the regular trigger pull is about 2.5lbs. With this trigger, you can "set" it by pushing the trigger forward, making it a much lighter pull- I have mine adjusted to under 2 ounces.

Between the Savage and the normal CZ 452 or 455, I would say its a wash, the CZ costs a bit more for a bit better fit and finish, but they're pretty close functionally. The CZ 453 really has the advantage for me, that trigger is the best I have ever used.

Thanks for the input guys, its good to get some first person feedback. I really like the Volquartsen, but thats a bit out of my price range...optioned out the way I would want it it comes out to around $1500, ouch.

Seems like the Savage is the most popular/available one out there. Seems like there's probably a pretty good reason for that too. I'm gonna look and see what I can find in stores for a stainless one with some or all of the options I want and just see how everything feels. I'll see what else I come across though there hasnt been much of anything else in the other stores that I've seen around here (Redlands)

IMHO I've Got a Savage 93R17,,,With a Cheap Lighted 3-16 Scope and It hits everything I aim at,,to 165 yrds (unless windy),,,Awsome Accuracy and the trigger is Adjustable ,,Mine is now 2lbs,,,,Unless You go Competition,,This Wil Replace your 22 Rifle (LR or WMR) for everything except plinking,,As For the Price vs Features,,Savage is a Great Purchase,,,(all are very accurate,,take the extra cash and buy some rounds),,,NOTE: I agree that the gun likes to shoot dirty ,,I get better groups after 50 rounds ...again IMHO,,,,,Rick

Yeah, I wasn't sure if its still around. I thought they discontinued the 452 with the introduction of the 455, but they kept the 453 around.

Either way, I bough mine from Turners about a year ago. If youre local to Eastvale/ Corona you're welcome to check mine out, but if they're discontinued its probably pointless anyway.

My uncle has a Savage (the camo one that came with a scope) and it shoots pretty well for what it costs. I agree, it will probably replace .22 for many things, especially since .22 ammo is so hard to come by right now. Otherwise .22 is hard to beat for cheap plinking.

Thanks, I appreciate the offer. I'm out in Redlands. I'm just gonna keep looking and see what I find. I'm not in a huge hurry so its not a big deal. I dont really need to spend $2k for a .17 but I want something more than just a basic plinking rifle which is why I'd like to find something with a nice trigger and a stainless heavy barrel. Gonna try Bass Pro sometime in the next couple days, I know they have a few Savages but I'm not sure what else they have. Hopefully if I get there early I can avoid the massive crowds lol.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but with the CZ 455 you have the option of switching barrels from .17HMR to .22LR (and i think even .22mag). So if you're in the market for a good, versatile rimfire rifle then the CZ could be the way to go.

I currently own a 455 in .22LR and actually just ordered the .17HMR barrel/magazines.

A friend of mine has the Savage 93R17, which I've shot many times and it is nice and accurate out to 100 yards and sometimes we ding the 200 yard gongs for fun. The bolt, after it gets dirty at the range can be a light chore to operate but not a deal breaker.

I am planning on getting the 17 HMR barrel for it because unlike 22lr, you can actually still find good 17 HMR ammo in Wal-Mart around here, and they are pleasant to shoot and accurate. If my CZ 455's 22lr performance is any indication of what it can do in 17 HMR, I will be a happy camper.

I would recommend either Savage or CZ. Either way you won't be disappointed, but with the pricing and scarcity of ammo these days, the old adage of "buy the cheaper one and save the rest of the money for ammo" may not always apply anymore, so my vote would be to get the CZ in 17 HMR flavor, then scour the web for available ammo.

I'll drive out there again, calling is almost more of a pain in the @ss cause you gotta keep calling back to get through with everyone else trying to call lol. Turners didnt have any the last time I was there. I know Bass Pro has Savages but I didnt wait in line to see guns last time i was there.

I love my Rugers in 17HM2,22LR,17HMR and 22MAG.I have one in target grade with the laminated stock.Being it is heavy and I hunt with them,I would rather have it in lightweight as well.I have cleaned up the seers and replaced springs with the Wolffs.
The Savages I own are pretty good shooters,but I have to get past how they look.
I like my little Browning T Bolt.
I will buy a CZ if a good opportunity comes up.
