AR with .22 upper questions

Ok I am thinking of getting a .22 cal upper for one of my AR lowers. My understanding is there are some that still need a buffer and spring and some that do not. Any pros and cons on the different types? Which ones do not need a buffer and spring installed?

They all need some type of buffer and spring to hold the bolt in place, otherwise the bolt assm might fly back and not go into battery.

The result would be FTF, FTE and alot of other stuff.

Dunno, I got a CMMG and it needs the buffer and spring in place. The S&W 15-22 has a poly lower that has the buffer tube integrated with the lower and it doesn't have a buffer but the buff tube is blocked out so that creates resistance for the bolt not to go flying backwards.

It's all about getting the bolt not to fly backwards and go out of battery. Hope that makes sense.

And if you already got a built lower why bother? Just keep it intact and throw the upper on it and you're GTG. No hassles.

I can't see having to remove the buffer spring and buffer everytime you want to change uppers, makes no sense.

OP, just add a dedicated upper to your standard lower, don't bother with taking the buffer and spring out when you do. I use a Ciener conversion bolt with a collar and dedicated barrel from CMMG. The rifle has a standard AR spring and buffer for two reasons:

1. Keeps the Ciener bolt assembly from moving back as has already been described.

2. The rifle's balance didn't feel right without it.

For most rifles, there would be 3. Quick and easy conversion back to 5.56; but in my case, I've added the AR22 bolt stop and that wouldn't work so well.
