    Grain weight questions regarding .22LR

In terms of damage using a .22lr round, the target being a person say 180lbs, at a distance of 25 yards, how much more damage would a 30 grain round compared to a 40 grain?

This is assuming we are using regular bulk ammo. I understand a heavier grain will be slightly slower due to the added weight, yet once it penetrates, which causes more damage?

    Both will just bounce off.

There is no 30gr bulk ammo that I am aware of. Most .22lr 30gr bullets are used in Hyper velocity ammunition. So the velocity of the ammo as well as the weight of the bullet contribute to the energy that the bullet will have at various ranges. The one 30gr bullet that I am familiar with is used by Aguila in their ammo that has a velocity (at the muzzle of a rifle) of 1750fps which is 500fps more than any 40gr bulk ammo. One also needs to know whether it is a round nose bullet or hollow point.

As far as any .22lr ammo causing damage to a human size target its all about shot placement. Ballistics tests show that most 40gr bullets penetrate about the same while a faster, lighter bullet may penetrate more its really all about the energy being carried by the bullet.

I believe you will find that Velocitors, Stingers, Aguila SuperMax and Interceptors are a much more powerful round than high velocity bulk rounds.

The real answer to your question can be found by researching ammo manufacturers websites and look at the energy levels of various ammunitions.
