New guy builds a 10/22

Hello all.

I bought a 10/22 about 20 years ago and have enjoyed shooting it. A buddy of mine who also has a 10/22 reciently installed a Volquartsen hammer/sear kit and a few other things. It shoots really nice. It got me to doing a little research. I had no idea there were so many parts available for this little gun. I decided to start out with some trigger parts myself and see if I want to do any more from there. Plan is to install a Power Customs adjustable pretravel hammer and sear, adjustable Ti trigger, Ti auto bolt release and a Ti extended mag release. Also picked up 3 stock mags and a trimag thingy from Volquartsen locally. The parts should be in today so pics tonight or tomorrow.

While I was breaking down the receiver I noticed the firing pin had some ware on it. So now I'm thinking I might get a new firing pin too. Which one is better? The A-2 tool steel ones or the Ti ones?

Plenty of 10/22 Guys/Gals on here, including Match Shooter/Builders. After a Volq. Mag Release/ Auto Bolt release, I started replacing Internal Parts. I called Volquartsen & asked about which Firing Pin to use. They suggested the Steel one they sell. Power Custom might make it, I dont remember.

Just my experience. Don`t "dry-fire" your Rimfire, if you don`t already know. Replace the Firing Pin & go have some Fun! I`m going to the Range in a few mins!

If it's working reliably the firing pin is probably still fine but either way a 10/22 is one of the few rimfires that are okay to dry fire, I just wouldn't go off the deep end with dry firing it. I've never worn out a firing pin so I can't help with the new one but just give them a call. BTW you may find this bolt installation tool handy, it's not a must but it sure makes it easier.

Edit: I also recommend adding a Tactical Solutions mag release.

There is an amazing variety of upgrades that you can do to your 10/22 and I'll list a few sources that I've used to upgrade my half dozen. Kidd components are pretty much the gold standard. SD is a great source for pretty much anything 10/22 and Boyds offers nice stocks for cheap. I'll post a few pics to give you some ideas.

You will have a lot of fun with it. I prefer the Volquartsen Target Hammer and Sear to the other brand. I don't know what is shipping right now, but the versions I tried years ago were heavier grittier trigger pulls than the Volquartsen parts.

I tried a lot of configurations, but ended up with a Volquartsen Muzzle weighted barrel, extended mag release, Hogue nylon stock without overmolding, a 6.5-20x40 scope, and tons of those Butler Creek mags.

If I was doing one today, I would probably look at 20" barrels and keep the rest the same.

Will the muzzle weighted barrel fit in the sporster stock? Also what does the 1:9 twist do for me?

Upgrading the barrel probably improves accuracy more than the other parts. 1:9 twist is better suited for heavy subsonic ammo. So if you shoot regular ammo, I'd stick with 1:16.

By the way, it's easy enough to make a DIY double mag - just sand the mag bottoms so they're square and super-glue them back-to-back. It took me ~ 10 minutes. It looks nice and streamlined. Tri-mag and quad-mag couplers work, I guess... but 1) they look ridiculous 2) they scratch your hand when shooting prone.

Well it's back together. Much lighter pull than before. Not sure about this "adjustable pretravel" sear though. I can't really tell a difference when adjusting it until it just doesn't work anymore.
