Ruger SP101 vs Taurus Model 94; DA .22lr revolver

Really $271.88 extra for the Ruger.

Just want a DA.22lr just for range fun, so what do you all think?
Any other DA 22lr's I should look at?

I'm not sure if your northern Ca. but if you are . My f.f.l. dealer "San Jose gun trader"has a ruger sp 101 in 22 Cal. that kind of hard to find. it maybe used,I don't know. Do a search here-" guns at San Jose trader" then send him a p.m. or call him. He is honest and his prices are great. He may even ship to your f.f.l.
Ruger or Taurus...get the Ruger. Built like tanks to last forever.

I have both the SP101-22lr and the Taurus model 94 (along with an LCR-22 and an older Rossi/Interarms Sportsman M511 22lr DA revolver).

-The DA trigger pull on my SP101 is smoother and lighter than on the M94.
-The SA trigger pull on my SP101 is SLIGHTLY better than the M94.
-The DA and SA trigger pull on my Rossi is SLIGHTLY lighter (but a bit grittier) than either my SP101 or M94.
-The M94 (5" barrel) is SLIGHTLY more accurate than my SP101 and my Rossi M511.
-All three guns needed better grips. I ended up going with Pachmayer Compacs on my M94 and Rossi.....Trausch grips on my SP101. The Trausch grips are my favorites.
-All have roughly 400 rounds through each and have been 100% reliable.
-The LCR-22 (being a DA only snubbie) really is in another class and isn't comparable.

Although I "like" my SP101 the best, For the money, and being a 9 shot vs 8, and for $299.....geez, I don't think you can go wrong with the Taurus M94!

How does $300 more get you ALOT more. I beg to differ. A $300 M94 is a way better gun "for the money" and is actually priced closer to what these types of firearms are worth. They all do the same job all be it some more graceful, some less.

Out of those two I would go ruger. I've owned three Taurus and sold them all. Probably the worst trigger pull I've ever tried. You can try to clean them up but read up or take a class on disassembling reassembling a revolver. It's not that easy. I'm not much of a ruger fan either, but I shoot my mark I every once in awhile. I also recommended smith. I have an old masterpiece I bought a whole ago for 250 and its a great shooter, not too pretty though. Go to a range and borrow someone's. maybe the trigger pull works ok for you and will do just fine for your needs/ shooting

I just came back from Turners to compare the two revolvers. Ya, that Taurus M94 DA trigger is way way stiff (I read over time that should soften somewhat). The Ruger SP101 is pretty stiff as well, but not as bad as the Taurus. There's a smoothness though in the action of the Ruger that wasn't there in the Taurus. The fit and finish does certainly lean towards the Ruger, but for me, not sure that justifies the price.

I'd go for a used Taurus, I've seen them on here under $300...
(In this one the guy was asking $280, but I think it sold for less)

I had considered this before as well, and from what I read all .22 cal revolvers have pretty stiff DA trigger pulls. Apparently, something about the rimfire cartridge demands it. I've read reviews from people who put in aftermarket springs to lighten it up and end up with light strikes/failures to fire, so it's not really something you can get around.

Anyhow, IMO .22 pistols are amazing fun, but the price tag on the Ruger is a deal breaker. The cost seems to be contradictory to one of the main purposes of .22 firearms.... economy!

Well I'm in a situation with Taurus right now. My family and I decided to purchase a new Taurus snubbie for my sis for home defense and personal protection. While at the range this past weekend, the gun locked up multiple times. The cylinder would not rotate and you could not pull the trigger. I realize that you are looking for a gun to plink with and your needs are different. The fact is, all manufactures have issues but this one really sticks in my craw. My sis is often home alone and a failure of this type is UNACCEPTABLE!!! This gun was designed solely for self protection and should be 100% reliable. The gun is on it's way back to Florida as we speak. When it returns, it damn well better be right. Taurus is known for having QC issues and I regret not buying the Ruger LCR in the first place. In our case it would have only meant an additional $50 to get a firearm with a great reputation for reliability. My suggestion is; if you can afford the Ruger, get it! They are built so well you can pass it through generations if you so desire. At this point I'm not sure if you could say the same for Taurus. Shorty

I own the Sp101 and the build is quite sturdy, however after about 50 rounds the pin holding my rear sight starts to drift out. Something to watch for when considering the Ruger.

I have this same problem with my MkII.
