CA's large capacity magazine laws affect all ammunition feeding devices, except for :
1) .22 calibered firearms with a fixed tubular magazine
2) any calibered lever-action firearm with a fixed tubular magazine
In regards to the S&W M&P-15/22...
Under CA's assault weapons laws, there are no magazine capacity restrictions for it.
Therefore, if you are able to legally acquire large capacity magazines, you can legally use them.
However...
Because it is not a lever-action firearm and it does not use a fixed tubular magazine; large capacity M&P-15/22 magazines can not be imported, manufactured or sold in CA.
Therefore, unless you are an exempt person (LEO, CA FFL dealer with large capacity magazine permit, etc.) you will only be able to acquire 10 round or less M&P-15/22 magazines.sigpic

FYI - If you use the term "clips" on this forum instead of "magazines" you are asking for negative responses. As far as your question....if you didn't own them before the ban, you can't use them.Comment

Welcome to CalGuns!
You might be confusing the 10 round limit to assault weapon laws, which do not apply to rimfire rifles. Like others have stated, unless you legally acquired the M&P 15/22 (25) round magazines thru an exemption such as law enforcement, you can't import them into the state and it is illegal for anyone to give them to you or sell them to you. Using them in your rifle does not generate assault weapon status like it would in a rifle using center fire cartridges. As long as the owner of a 25 rd magazine is present, he/she can loan it to you. I take all my "hicaps" with me when I go out shooting with friends so they can enjoy them, even if only briefly.
The law is poorly written and hard to understand. Don't expect Caliornia gun laws to make sense. They were written by people who hate guns and don't really know much about them.
Great rifle, enjoy it.Last edited by Ron-Solo; 11-27-2012, 1:04 AM.LASD Retired
