I've heard a 50 foot zero makes your rifle good out to 50 yards. The closest range to me has a 50 foot max. I could go to another range that has a 25 yard range and sight in there if need be. Ideally, I'd like to go to 50 foot, 25 yard, and 50 yard ranges and be on the bullseye if possible at all three distances.

A quick check with a ballistic programs shows that with a 50ft zero you will be 3/4" high @ 25yds and 1" high at 50yds. I used a 1250fps 36grain hollowpoint as the ammo. So if you use a 1" bullseye and hit the bottom at 50ft you should hit the top of it @ 50yds using the same aimpoint. Bear in mind that altitude, temperature, wind, etc... will impact the bullet flight. I'm just providing a perfect world starting point.

Frank are you in Lakeside in San Diego County? P2K in El Cajon has a hundred yard indoor range (25-100 yd). I was just there today.

Thanks Izzy, my kid's rifles are using aperture sights. I think we set them at the 50 foot range. My scoped 22 I think is set at 25 yards. I wanted to find a distance where we could all enjoy shooting. Either one range or the other. Sounds like either way I'm okay.

Thanks Fredo, yes, I've been there. I prefer other ranges though. Thanks for asking.

I've always zeroed my 22s at 50 yards---why?---I don't really know---just always done it that way!

            me too.

I zero all my rifles at 50 yards and move out to 100 to adjust.

              Same here, 50 yards.

I'll give my opinion. It depends on the ammunition and target size (if going for the maximum point blank range of the round).

According to Chuck Hawks data, a 40 grain bullet at 1255 fps has a MPBR of 90 yards. It will be three inches low at 100 yards and has a MRT of +1.5".

I zeroed my CZ 453 for 80 yards. It's been awhile so I don't remember exactly how I came up with 80 yards, but it requires little to no hold over out to about 100 yards.

If you're benchrest shooting at a certain distance then that is your answer.
