New H&R 5200--range report

Won this H&R model 5200 at an auction this evening. Guess it is very similar to the H&R M12.

This one seems to be missing the front sight block. Anyone know where they are available?

Sight base (height dependant upon rear sight used) and front globe sights (tomplins w/inserts) are available from Chapions choice or champions shooters suppy.

Measure distance between fron tapped holes and order front base by hole spacing and height.

If you were in SF bay area I have all items needd.

Forgot to add this, most of these rifles were sold by the CMP with Redfield Palma sights and redfield international front sights, I have both if interested in purchasing.

I have a decent selection of sights already...Redfield Palma, International and Olympic rears and Olympic and PH front globes. Also a couple of British sights...a "Swenson" and a Wilkes "Precision". I'll just have to figure out what block height I need for the front globe.



The Swenson sight looks like it will work where a Redfiled Palma would work.





The Wilkes is very similar to the Swenson

Nice rifle.
The US M12 is the Govt. designation for the Harrington & Richardson 5200. Yours has a nice commercial walnut stock. M12's came with Palma rears and Olympic fronts. I can measure mine and give you the correct height, or you can do a little math and figure out the parallelism off the center of the bore with the rear as a known measurement. I would hazard a guess and say the front is parallel with the scope blocks as well.

A poster on another site advised a front block height of 0.175" using a Redfield Palma rear and International front. I believe he used his Model 12 to determine that.

I'll check mine later today for you (gotta go shoot right now!). I bought 2 when the DCM first offered them, and they came with Olympic fronts. I may have an original base, If I dont Frank has some.

A buddy is putting on a small bore "match stick match" on Monday, so I used a Viani scope mount and mounted a B&L 6-24 scope on this one. I took it to the range yesterday along with a Remington 513T that I will be using (my younger son will use the H&R).

Both rifles shot well, but as the practice session went on, the H&R developed a habit of not extracting the shells. Toward the end, every shell had to be pushed out with a brass rod from the bore.

Anyone know what could cause this?

I cleaned out the chamber, bolt, and barrel and got far fewer failures to extract.

I've got a couple of M12's and compared the spring tension on the extractors on the 5200 to the M12's...M12's seemed to have more tension.

My son and I shot the match yesterday, he with the 5200, me with a scoped Remington 513T. I mounted a Bausch and Lomb 6-24X scope on the 5200 and a Bushnell 3200 Elite 10X on the Remington.




It was pretty cold (low 30's) for these parts and it seemed to have affected the zero of the rifles. Winds were light and variable. We had to re-zero the rifles a bit to get them back on target. The match was shot off a sand bag front rest, no (except for your hand) rear rest At 50 yards.

Here is my son's warm up target. Unfortunately we turned in our official targets.



The bullseyes on the left and right were to warm up and re-zero the rifle. The center group was a 4 shot (.403") group to confirm the re-zero. You can see some of my son's match stick hits as he settled in on the target. He was using the CMP black box practice ammo.

I'm kinda interested in what honest-to-God target ammo would do.
