Does any one own a Browning BAR-22? Can any one tell me what the wax like piece is, and if its is a needed item. While cleaning my BAR-22 my waxy thing broke in to pieces. Would a rubber gasket cut to fit work as a replacement?

That is a pretty rare rifle that you have - I doubt there are more than a handful on this forum that have one. Post your question over at
A family friendly forum community dedicated to rimfire firearm owners and enthusiasts. Come join the discussion of all manner of rimfire pistols, rifles, optics, ammo, gunsmithing, customization, reviews, hunting, accessories, classifieds, and more!
A photo with maybe a better description of where the part is on the rifle may benefit a good and quick response.
EDIT: Can't believe I passed up on one 7 years ago for 200 bucks

The piece is most likely the bolt buffer that was in the back of the action. They age and fall apart every 6 to 8 years. No one has them.
I cut a replacement one out of a Mac10 one I got from MidwayUSA. It stops the bolt from hammering on the back of the action.
Hope that helps.

Perhaps a call or email to Browning for a parts schematic and/or the part if you can figure out what it is. I think CCrawford is probably correct that its the bolt buffer.Comment

The buffer part is not listed nor illustrated in my copy of the Owner's Manual that was included with mine. I bought mine new in September of 1988. When I called Browning a couple of years ago, the CS tech actually laughed
and said, "No, it is not available." Good luck trying to find an original that has not broken down into the gummy blob you found in yours. I think it was added after they changed the design in "type/series II" and "type/series III." The Manual was not changed as the gun did. The buffer is not shown later on in the photos of the action. They made 3 different series from 1976 to 1985 when they were canceled per the Browning website.
I bet that type/series I did not have them and the later series did, and they did not update the manual. That is why Gun Parts lists it as a "Buffer, Type III". Mine was a close out from new old stock made in 1982.

Good Luck whatever path you choose.Comment
