I have 1300 rounds from SKS, Wolf, ElY, CCI, Remmington, federal and Aquila.
All rounds are 1080 FPS or less and all are match grade.

I am going to head out to the range with a cmmg AR 22lr and 795 Appleseed rifle.

I will setup 25 yard appleseed squares and find the best brands for my 2 hitters.

This will be a full day of hell

Will std velocity ammo cycle reliably?

Do your Semi's cycle standard velocity reliably? I usually reserve that stuff for bolt actions.

So far yes. I currently only use cci greentag which clocks in at 1080fps i believe.

Why you go so low?

I have been using CCI mini mags in my 10/22 for doing the online rimfire match. I didn't go out of my way for them, it's just what the 22 conversion on my Kimber 1911 likes so I used the high velocity round in both guns.

Maybe I'll just buy some and shoot it...see what happens.

None that I know of. we have discussed it here and what I have gleemed is:

1080 fps and below is sub sonic
when a 40 grn round passes 50 yards and is traveling at super sonic, it will drop below super sonic and tumble a bit potentially affecting accuracy
and a 22lr can take out a zombie at 100 yards

Using CCI Mini-mags in your 1911 is probably giving you a muzzle velocity that is sub-sonic, only a chronograph will tell you for sure. .22lr ammo velocity is measured in a rifle with a 16" barrel so a short barrel in a pistol/revolver will not allow the ammunition to reach the advertised velocity.

There are many critical elements in .22lr ammunition. Case quality, rim thickness, primer distirbution, bullet quality, consistent powder quantity and type of lubrication. High quality match .22 ammo manufacturers use a higher standard of quality control on their ammo than manufacturers of high velocity bulk ammo. That's the reason bulk ammo costs are around $.03-$.06 per round where match ammo (nearly all sub-sonic) costs are $.10-$.60 per round. Rim thickness and primer distribution are very key in obtaining consistent velocity in rimfire ammo.

When the firing pin strikes the rim the more consitent the ignition, the higher the accuracy will be given that the other components specs are also consistent. Uneven primer distribution will result in inconsitent ignition which will affect accuracy (we call theim flyers) even if the other components are of high quality.

No doubt that the more one pays for ammo, the higher the quality, the more consistent and accurate the ammo will be. However there is a limit and that is the skill of the shooter and equipment. I tried some high dollar Lapua and Eley Tenex ammo and while it did shoot a litttle better than Wolf or SK Std+, the cost differential was not worth it. The limiting factor was me.

It seems like I have a lot of un-burnt powder when I shoot it out of my Kimber, I can see a good cloud in front of my muzzle. I know I could be more efficient with the round I use but so far the MiniMag is the only round that feeds reliably EVERY time. Every other brand has had feed issues. Time to try some other CCIs in this gun.

I will try a standard and sub-sonic velocity rounds in all my guns tomorrow @ my Sac Valley Shooting Center C3 monthly shoot that everyone should be at...

PS...I will try & find a zombie to shoot since I will miss the larger hunt...

Don't get me wrong, CCI Mini-Mag is a good ammo. I rarely shoot expensive ammo out of my pistols/revolver mainly because I shoot @ 25yds or less so most ammo, even bulk is accurate enough at those distances. One thing for sure we have to use the ammo that works in the particular weapons that we use. I suck at pistol shooting anyway so I usually just shoot at metal plates and huge targets so I feel better. I am lucky that all my .22 handguns shoot nearly any ammo that I buy, even Rem Golden Bullets.

For some real fireballs and clouds of unburned powder I load up my Rough Rider with CCI .22WMR and let em rip. I like shooting 6" metal plates @ 50yds with that one. Just have to use triple ear protection.
