Dedicated .22 upper: build list parts recommendations please

Hi All,

So after considering my options, I'm going with a dedicated .22 upper.

So far here's the list of parts I'm considering:

1. upper: slick side DPMS low-profile upper receiver.
2. barrel: Taccom 17" Ultra light.
3. Handguard: undecided. Either my old Troy TRX, Taccom carbon fiber, or Nordic NC-22 hand guard.

So I bet you are asking why not just get the Taccom upper? Well I'm still not 100% about running a slick handguard, might want top rail sometime in the future. And also see #4.

4. Bolt: I have no idea what I want here. The Taccom bolt should be good to go, but from reading the different forums, even the guys that praise Taccom are still using CMMG stainless bolts. When I looked on CMMG, they list a SST bolt for $99, but it seems it's not complete. It says bolt assembly, but I will also need the frame spring, and firing pin? But the bolt hold back options seems intriguing, and I'm not sure how to achieve that without the cmmg bolt system.

edit: found a few more posts and the threads where I read about running cmmg bolts and taccom barrels are made before taccom came out with their own bolt assembly. I believe the bolt design was completed recently, the 2nd half of this year. hmmm......

5. optics: not decided. PA micro? 3-9 scope, have no idea.

Anyway, this upper will go on 2 different lowers, pending on my mood. Both lowers have Giesseles, SSA and SSA-E. Taccom mentioned something about their bolt assembly working better with triggers down to 3.5lb, well I believe the SSA-E is around that pull. And I didn't see the bolt listed as an individual part I can order.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I run the CMMG stainless with my 4 TACCOM's.
I like the stainless because it's stronger, smoother, uses less lube, stays cleaner and is easier to clean than the Phosphate.
TACCOM is workingon his on bcg. Not completed yet.
He is selling BCG's with his uppers I believe.
Tims barrels are quickly becoming my favorites. Light, dependable, and accurate. Priced right too.

Taccom barrels come with a blued, fitted collar that will snap to a CMMG rail.

The TACCOM barrel is the way to go... I run Troy TRX Extremes/Alpha's on ALL my .22LR builds... It's light, protects the barrel, and gives me the rail space i need.

As for bolt... Eeeh... Stainless or some kind of nickel boron or something along those lines is where it's at.

I emailed him to see if he sells uppers with out the handguard. And yes, he is selling BCG with the uppers, but not alone. So, you're saying that BCG is not his design? and he's working on one right now?

I'm also trying to decide on threaded barrel or not. I've never rapid fired .22 before. From the only 10/22 I've ever tried, I can't imaging needing a comp. But with a thread barrel I always have the option of adding something later.

1) Yes, he's working on his own customized BCG right now..

2) Honestly... lol... It's really not needed. I can fire my .22's extremely quickly and with a TACCOM barrel even as light weight as it is... It's just not needed at all. Now, if you were doing it for suppressor capability (in a Non-CA State) that would be another thing.

thanks for the answers. I guess I should just pick up the cmmg stainless, just to make things easier. Either way, I don't see myself with the Taccom guard, even if I don't run a front buis, I would want to be able to install a bipod mount. I love that little bi-pod adapter they make for the TRX.

so, I'll need the bolt, frame and the survival springs. I'm definitely gonna order the taccom firing pin and pressure plug

I have been using the Midwest Industries Gen ll SS and T series on the latest builds. Easy to install, light weight, narrow, and solid.

thanks, would you happen to know when Tim's bolt will be ready? I can wait a month or two if he's close.

And yea, the MI gen II are nice. My first rail ever was a Gen I and I switched it out for a Troy, and it's been Troy ever since. Well, I guess I can always just wait until Black friday and see what kind of sales comes up, or what kind of deal I can find at the next gunshow (in 2 weeks).

doh! I just thought of something about the DPMS slick side receiver. Will it clear a Magpul BAD lever? Or rather, will a BAD lever clear the receiver.

Heres a pic of one of ours with one of Tims Barrels. We run a JP Freefloat with it and the CMMG Stainless Bolt assembly. The barrel has been very good so far. It weighs right around 5.5 pounds as shown but it could be much lighter with a Magpul stock or something similar. The Ergo F93 is pretty stout..Thanks
